In addition to being a world fashion capital, a theme seen throughout the Paris Motor Show
was that France is a breeding ground for adventure. The French Alps have served as an incubator for some of today's craziest sports, such as wingsuit flying and speed flying. Perhaps that's why the Paris show had the largest serving of adventure vehicles that we've seen since Overland Expo
. Special edition 4x4s, burlified mini SUVs and concepts straight-out named "Adventure" were seen throughout the show's various halls.
The Mercedes G-Class
is 35 years old, and the German manufacturer is celebrating with the aptly-named G-Class Edition 35 models. Both the G 350 BlueTEC Edition 35 and G 500 Edition 35 are fitted with small styling changes inside and out, to help them stand out from the standard models.
The Paris Motor Show has brought about many surprises from its attending manufacturers. Lamborghini
have all unveiled concepts that may or may not make it to production. Honda, on the other hand, has unveiled not one, but three new prototype vehicles that are set to hit European showroom floors from 2015.
Land Rover has taken the wraps off its 2015 Discovery Sport, a compact version of the popular "Disco" that is aimed at the family market. The premium compact SUV features a shorter wheelbase combined with a seven-seat capacity and standard all-wheel drive and takes a few design cues from the Vision concept
in an attempt to shed it’s country image for something with a bit more urban cred.
Kia is looking to continue its upmarket charge with its third-generation Sorento SUV. Billed as a leap in quality and technology, the latest Sorento SUV takes design cues from the 2013 Kia Cross GT concept
and is built around a stiffer bodyshell that the company says delivers improved handling, comfort and safety.
After months of teasing, Volvo has finally detailed its new XC90, debuting with it a new hybrid engine, a new modular platform and a brand new styling direction for the brand. With so many firsts, the XC90 is a big car for Volvo – such a big car that Volvo President and CEO Håkan Samuelsson is calling its launch one of the most important days in the company’s history.
Earlier this month, Mercedes revealed its S600 Guard
armored car. BMW has now followed suit by using Moscow’s International Auto Salon to launch the new X5 Security Plus, an armored version of the X5 SUV designed to protect customers against "violent assault, kidnapping and organized crime."
Land Rover is claiming a new lap record for a production SUV on the renowned 20.8 km (13 mile) Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring in Germany, with its Range Rover Sport SVR completing the circuit in just 8 minutes and 14 seconds. If verified, this time is equal to one set by a BMW Alpina B3 Biturbo Coupé in December of 2008, and represents a mighty fast lap time for any car, let alone an SUV.
The 2015 Porsche Cayenne debuts with a few interesting lineup changes. The most radical change is the premiere of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, a quick, powerful gas-electric SUV with all-electric driving capabilities. Other updates include modest restyling and a downsized (but more powerful) S-trim engine.
