Radical 4-in-1 piston engine promises hybrid-like efficiency

One of the many challenges facing engine designers is the need to increase power output while simultaneously retaining or improving efficiency. Although a four-cylinder engine is still an engineering marvel, there remain many friction points that reduce energy output. Namikoshi Electronics of Japan believes its unorthodox 4-in-1 concept engine could provide an alternative powerplant to the automobile industry. Read More

Duke Engines' incredibly compact, lightweight valveless axial engine

New Zealand's Duke Engines has been busy developing and demonstrating excellent results with a bizarre prototype axial engine that completely does away with valves, while delivering excellent power and torque from an engine much smaller, lighter and simpler than the existing technology. We spoke with Duke co-founder John Garvey to find out how the Duke Axial Engine project is going. Read More

Experimental diesel/gas engine could give 2009 Saturn a big boost in fuel efficiency

Five years ago we first heard about a Caterpillar diesel engine located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, that had been modified to run on an unlikely-sounding mixture of diesel and gasoline. Not only did the one-cylinder engine work, but it was more efficient than pure-diesel or pure-gas engines at converting the chemical energy of fuel into motion. Sitting in a basement lab, however, isn't the same as experiencing use in the real world. That's why students at UW-Madison, led by Prof. Rolf Reitz, have now put another diesel/gas engine into a 2009 Saturn. Read More

Mazda joins the downsizing party with 1.5-liter SKYACTIV diesel

In spite of the saying "ain't no replacement for displacement," manufacturers are making their engines smaller by the day. Ford has its 1.0-liter EcoBoost, and Mini a 1.5-liter three cylinder motor. Renault's next Twingo will feature not only a 1.0-liter engine, but a 900cc motor making 90hp. Now, Mazda has joined the global trend for downsizing engines with its new turbocharged 1.5-liter SKYACTIV diesel. After teasing us at the Geneva Motor Show, the Japanese car company has finally released details of its new motor. Read More

"World's most efficient aero engine" on its way to first A350 XWB

Last year, the Airbus A350 XWB took to the air for the first time. Eleven months later, Rolls-Royce announces that the first production Trent XWB turbofan engine that powers the plane has left the factory and is on its way to Toulouse, France to be installed in a Qatar Airways A350 XWB. According to Rolls-Royce, Qatar airways has ordered 80 of the aircraft and the “world's most efficient aero engine” engine is the first of 1,600 ordered worldwide by 40 airlines around the world.
