Buell's 1125 sportsbike reborn as the 47 Ronin

By - October 8, 2014 23 Pictures
Here's a gorgeous project of passion worthy of ten minutes of your time. Colorado's Magpul is a company best known for its firearm magazines and accessories. But when unique American sportsbike brand Buell was closed down by Harley-Davidson in 2009, a team of Magpul designers and engineers snapped up 47 of Buell's finest creations – the 1125 series sportsbikes – at runout prices, and set about production of a very limited run of extremely sexy custom bikes. Keeping the 1125's excellent engine, frame and wheels, which the Ronin team considered to be the chief technical standouts of the Buell bikes, they created a girder-forked, naked beast with a wicked-looking front radiator, some 54 lbs lighter than the originals. First ride: Erik Buell’s EBR 1190SX streetfighter

By - August 11, 2014 18 Pictures
The 1190SX streetfighter has landed, and we were fortunate enough to join the local importer at an abandoned warehouse to photograph and play with the very first SX out of the crate in Australia. Unlike most super-nakeds, the SX retains the full 180-odd horsepower of its superbike stablemate, the 1190RX, which we reviewed last month. Here’s a few first impressions, and a bunch of highly irresponsible photographs to tide you over until we get a chance to do a full road review. Read More

Motorcycle Road Test: 2014 EBR 1190RX

By - July 31, 2014 24 Pictures
The all-American sportsbike is back, and this time Erik Buell doesn't have a heritage cruiser company looking over his shoulder telling him how to build it. The 1190RX is the first mass-production sportsbike out of the new EBR factory in Wisconsin, a 185-horsepower, torque-stompin', slightly quirky racer with its eyes firmly focused on World Superbike contention. But does that equate to a good road bike? We spent a couple of weeks with the RX to find out. Read More

By - July 6, 2014 18 Pictures
Full specifications, pricing and photos have arrived for Erik Buell's newest streetbike – the EBR 1190SX streetfighter. And if, like many people, you're sick of hearing the phrase "detuned for more midrange," you'll be happy to know that the 1190SX is basically the full 185-horsepower 1190RX superbike experience, with the plastics off and a higher handlebar. Boy, will this thing be a handful. Read More

Suzuki's Recursion – a Buell by any other name

By - November 21, 2013 17 Pictures
Suzuki's Recursion concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show yesterday looks very much like it has taken a leaf from the Erik Buell book of motorcycle design – light weight, mass centralization, broad usable power, and minimalism. While the underslung muffler is reminiscent, you might be excused in missing other similarities, as the forced induction 600cc parallel-twin engine is at first glance quite different to the big 1200cc V-twin of a Buell. In actual fact, it's not. Read the figures and you get a very similar powerband to the Buell of yore with its Harley Davidson motor. Read More

Peugeot's elegant DL122 - the bicycle with a laptop compartment

By - March 9, 2012 11 Pictures
Elegance and practicality are a killer combination, and both are abundant in the latest concept from Peugeot. The company's rethinking of the traditional urban bicycle won't suit everyone, but it will almost certainly appeal to enough cyber-serfs to warrant production. The design highlight is the positioning of bike's leather laptop compartment, which is safer for the laptop, and provides a better balanced bike that's nimble and fun to ride. You can even lock the briefcase in place. Read More

The world's largest motorcycle manufacturer considers Ducati purchase

If you've been having trouble comfortably wrapping your brain cells around the concept of what were once proud national symbols of excellence changing countries, such as the Malaysian-owned Lotus, the Chinese-owned Saab and MG or the Indian Jaguar and Range Rover, then please be seated before reading further. It seems that India's Hero MotoCorp, the world's largest manufacturer of both bicycles and motorcycles is considering the purchase of Italy's deeply loved manufacturer of sports motorcycles, Ducati. Typhon 1190: the badass Buell streetfighter that could have been

By - November 30, 2010 17 Pictures
Erik Buell never got a chance to build a proper naked version of his final Buell sportsbike, the 1125R. We'd like to think that if he did, he'd have ditched the bulbous side-mounted radiators and found another way to water-cool his new Rotax engine. Either way, Germany's Pegasus race team and Gruner Engineering have paired up to build an 1190 Buell superbike racer into the tarmac-ripping streetfighter that could have been. One hundred and eighty-five horsepower, 161kg dry, buck-naked and ready to roar – meet the Typhon 1190. Read More
