As our recent Cloud storage comparison guide demonstrated, there are plenty of options for storing your photos and videos with an online storage provider, such as Google or Dropbox. A private, home-based cloud can provide more control, better security and home-integration options, though. EzeeCube is a new home cloud hub that aims to do just that.  Read More

The new Transporter Sync device

The market for cloud storage has ballooned rather quickly. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that SkyDrive had hit the 250 million user mark and that was followed not long after by Dropbox announcing its 175 millionth user. The explosion in popularity of cloud storage has naturally led to increased concerns about security, however, creating an opportunity that Connected Data gladly exploited with its Transporter device and, now, the Transporter Sync.  Read More

A few minutes of spinning should be enough for a quick phone call

It's always the way. Just when you have to make that important phone call, your smartphone tells you it's time to recharge your battery and then promptly dies. Little wonder then that the backup charger market has become such a crowded space. Arguably the most appealing battery blocks available are those that can also offer off-grid emergency power from sources like PV panels or kinetic energy. The Voltmaker takes the latter approach, providing your smartphone with enough juice to make a quick phone call with a flick (or more accurately, several flicks) of the wrist.  Read More

The Tarot is claimed to be the 'world's thinnest power bank'

Keeping mobile phones charged is rapidly becoming just as profitable as making the smartphones themselves. As such, we're seeing all kinds of power banks hitting the market. We saw the Fuel charger hit Kickstarter earlier this month, which claimed to be the world's smallest battery back-up, and now a company called Powerocks is entering the fray with Tarot, which it claims is "the world's thinnest power bank."  Read More

When it comes to backing up your files, there are generally two approaches ... you can put them on a physical device such as a hard drive, or you can upload them to the cloud. Hard drives can be lost or destroyed, however, while cloud-based services usually charge monthly fees for larger amounts of data – plus, not everyone feels comfortable trusting their files to faceless corporations. Well, that’s where the Transporter comes in. It allows you to store your files off-site, on the hard drives of people whom you know and trust.  Read More

Seagate's Backup Plus drives come in a range of colors and size capacities

Backing up data is a simple and yet forgettable part of modern life. If files are important, they need to be stored in multiple places. A desktop or laptop hard drive is the first, and an external drive, disc or the cloud is generally the second. But even if you're diligent - and more than three quarters of us aren't according to data collected by Parks Associates - pictures, videos and other files uploaded to social networking sites might miss that crucial backup. Backup Plus, a new line of storage devices from Seagate, offers to save those photos and videos you posted on Facebook, Flickr and elsewhere with the click of an icon.  Read More

Despite the widespread belief upon their introduction to the market in the early 1980s that CDs would safely store data encoded on them forever, CDs and DVDs are actually susceptible to damage from both normal use and environmental exposure and have an average lifespan of under 10 years. A new optical disc company based in Salt Lake City called Millenniata is set to deliver a new type of optical disc that can be read on standard DVD drives but will safely store data for up to 1,000 years.  Read More
