Two of the rarest and most valuable motorcycles in the world are going to public auction n...

In 2013, one of only two Winchester motorcycles known to exist sold at auction for what was then a world record price of US$580,000. The other Winchester failed to meet reserve and was passed in with a high bid of $520,000. Our article on the Winchesters makes for interesting reading because it concludes that the American Gun marketplace is buoyant that the Winchester's gun provenance had elevated the value of the motorcycles beyond the normal motorcycle marketplace. Now the bikes have been entrusted to the world's foremost firearm auctioneers, James D. Julia, for sale in March. Records can be expected to fall.  Read More

If Bonhams' estimated sale price of €24,000-€28,000 (US$28,000-$33,000) for Senna's 1981 D...

A successful career in karting is now part of a driver's preparation for Formula One. All current drivers and 29 of the last 30 F1 champions began by racing karts. Senna, Schumacher and Hamilton had karts at four years of age, while Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel both started at three. If karting is now such an important part of a driver's career, how much is the kart that Ayrton Senna raced to fourth place in the 1981 world karting championship worth as memorabilia?  Read More

Among his many achievements, British computer science pioneer Alan Turing created one of the first theoretical models of a general-purpose computer, helped develop the concept of artificial intelligence, and was in charge of breaking the German Enigma cypher during World War II. With the recent release of the film The Imitation Game, he's now becoming known to a whole new generation. It's only fitting, therefore, that a rare collection of his scientific notes is about to head to auction.  Read More

One of only 15 ever produced, this 1950 Vincent Series C White Shadow was sold for US$111,...

Only 15 White Shadows were produced, which makes them the rarest version of the second most desirable motorcycle to collectors (Brough Superior is the most coveted marque). It was therefore logical that this bike, which went to auction in Las Vegas last night, would join the other 14 Vincent V-twins in the top 100 motorcycles of all time.  Read More

Batista Pininfarina's personal championing of this radical project to build a more efficie...

The name Pininfarina is synonymous with expensive and elegant Italian sports cars such as the Maserati GranTurismo, Alfa Romeo Spyder and a log file of Ferraris such as the 365 GTB/4, Enzo, F40 and Testarossa. The global design legend does much more than style beautiful cars though, and ample testimony will appear at auction this week in the form of a little known 1960s concept car. With its four wheels arranged in a diamond shape, the tiny aerodynamic four-seater Pininfarina-X had a drag coefficient of 0.23, indicating that Pininfarina was a long way ahead of the rest of the world in exploring the critical area of aerodynamics, long before it was fashionable.  Read More

The vehicle cost US$400,000 and many human lifetimes of experience to build.
