Smart phones to drive new mobile sales to one in every four humans this year

According to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast Report, the mobile phone market reached 1.6 billion units in 2010, and will increase further to 1.8 billion units this year – there are less than seven billion humans on Mother Earth, so that's more than one new mobile phone for every man, woman and child. The growth is being driven by continuously growing emerging markets and the trend to upgrading to smart phones.

Revenue for mobile displays is forecast to grow 47% in 2011 after a 10.8% Y/Y result for 2010. Demand is growing for higher spec mobiles, with greater display areas, higher resolution and an array of other embedded technology.

The next major display technology appears set to be AMOLED, which will nearly double in number from 128 million units ($4.0 billion - 191% Y/Y) in 2011 to 212 million ($6.4 billion - 66% Y/Y) in 2012.
