March 8, 2008 Samsung has announced that it is shipping the world’s first half-terabyte (500GB) 2.5” mobile hard drive and the industry’s fastest DVD burner.

The Spinpoint M6 is a 500GB mobile hard drive designed to fit the industry’s standard 9.5mm height dimension and is targeted to meet the growing storage needs of today’s laptop computers as well as slim form factor PCs and high-density mobile applications. Samsung claims the new Super-WriteMaster SH-S223 is the industry’s fastest DVD burner that enables burning of data at high speeds - even on low-speed media.

The Spinpoint M6 drive consists of three 167GB platters in a 2.5” hard drive frame measuring just 9.5mm in height- allowing notebook PC manufacturers the option of easily integrating the Spinpoint M6 into the tens of millions of notebook PCs that ship every quarter. For premium notebook PCs, the Spinpoint M6 meets the Microsoft fast-boot design requirements and supports ramp load and unload of up to 600,000 times. The Spinpoint M6 500GB hard drive features a 5400rpm spindle speed, a 8MB cache, and 3.0Gbps SATA interface with a Free-Fall-Sensor available as an optional feature. Samsung were able to achieve the 500GB storage capacity of the drive by using Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology instead of the traditional longitudinal recording technology. The drive also features Samsung’s Flying-on-Demand head technology that improves recording stability over changing temperature ranges.

The SH-S223 DVD burner offers a powerful over-speed performance feature that enables burning of data at high speeds - even on low-speed media. With over-speed recording, users can write at 22X speeds on 16X media and 12X speeds on 8X media. The SH-S223 drive provides 22X DVD±R recording, 12X DVD-RAM recording, 16X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 12X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording. This means 4.7GB can be burnt to a DVD±R disc in approximately 4 minutes and 26 seconds while it takes less than 12 minutes to burn 4.7GB in DVD-RAM format. The SH-S223 drive supports the SATA interface and includes free software for creating music, video, photo and data discs. The drive also includes Samsung’s live firmware update program that lets users download new firmware upgrades for free and keep their drives updated and, as with Samsung’s complete WriteMaster optical disc drive lineup, the SH-S223 features Samsung’s Speed Adjustment Technology, (SAT), Tilt Actuator Compensation, (TAC), and Double Optimum Power Control, (OPC). Buffer Under Run Free Technology supports stable writing under high speed while Magic Speed and Automatic Ball Balancing System, (ABS), technologies reduce vibration and noise. The SH-S223 also has an eco-friendly design and is RoHS compliant.

The Spinpoint M6 is currently shipping with an MSRP of USD$299 while no pricing info was available for the SH-S223 at the time of writing.
