Just because the world has moved on from the Space Race years doesn't mean that NASA has. Researchers from the agency are playing with new ways to guide returning space capsules back to the Earth. One possibility is the addition of helicopter-like rotors to the spacecrafts, allowing for landings just about anywhere.
