In 1966, Lamborghini grabbed the world by the unmentionables and showed it one of the most delicious, lust-worthy cars it had ever seen. Just months after being displayed as a rolling chassis, the Miura and its super-smooth Bertone-crafted body and mid-engine layout made a huge splash at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. A look at its rollercoaster curves, oval headlights and smooth-dropping fastback, and the car still gives goosebumps 50 years later. So it's no wonder Lamborghini has spent much of the year celebrating the Miura's 50th birthday, just a few years after celebrating its own. The latest piece of the celebration is the all-new Aventador Miura Homage, a special edition Aventador in Miura clothing.

The Miura has been called the world's first supercar, and even if you don't recognize it as such, Lamborghini's own description of "forerunner of all V12 Lamborghini super sports cars" gives it a pretty high place in the hierarchy of the automobile. The car came in three models during its production run between 1966 and 1972: the original 350-hp Miura, the 370-hp Miura S and the 385-hp Miura SV that debuted in 1971.

The Aventador Miura Homage revives a touch of the Miura's splendor, though the first thing you might notice about it is that it looks like an Aventador, not a Miura. Lamborghini didn't attempt to exaggerate the hood and fender curves, reshape the headlights or add a single slat at the rear windshield. But when you look at the Miura in the photo below, you see what Lamborghini has done.

Created by Lamborghini's Ad Personam studio, the Aventador Miura Homage wears heritage-inspired body paint with a contrast lower body treatment. Lamborghini will offer buyers a choice of six solid and metallic heritage colors, including Rosso Arancio Miura, Verde Scandal and metallic Blu Tahiti. The debut model's contrast gold sills are complemented by gold Dione rims, and matte silver rims will also be on offer. A metallic Miura badge on the side and black Lamborghini logo in back finish the special edition exterior off.

Inside, buyers will have their choice of Nero Ade or Terra Emilia leather, and the carbon fiber package comes standard. The Miura 50th anniversary logo is stitched into the seats in gold or silver and "Lamborghini" embroidered on the leather dashboard. There's also a limited edition plate.

Lamborghini hasn't done any tuning to the Aventador's 6.5-liter V12 engine, but at 690 hp, that engine is around twice as powerful as the original Miura's 3.9-liter V12. The car maintains the 2.9-second 0-62 mph (100 km/h) and 217 mph (350 km/h) top speed of the standard Aventador.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed unveiling of the Aventador Miura Homage follows a variety of other Miura celebratory events throughout the year, including a Miura driving tour through Italy that wrapped up earlier this month, a Miura celebration at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, and a restoration of the original 1971 Miura SV revealed at Techno-Classica Essen (below).
