Canon gives the world’s top selling digital SLR a full-body makeover

February 18, 2005 Canon has announced the EOS 350D digital SLR camera, providing unparalleled performance to hobby photographers and users entering the digital SLR market for the first time. Featuring a Canon-developed 8.0 megapixel CMOS image sensor, the EOS 350D offers even more than its predecessor, the EOS 300D. Accompanying the new camera, Canon also announced two new zoom lenses that expand the EF-S series for digital SLR cameras.
Thanks to its proprietary DiG!C II image processor, users will love the EOS 350D's almost non-existent start-up time of just 0.2 seconds, while the DiG!C II processor also ensures the camera is capable of capturing three frames per second (fps) for a burst of up to 14 consecutive frames.
"The EOS 350D is a complete makeover from the previous model, around 25 percent smaller and weighing almost 15 percent less. We've incorporated Canon's latest technologies with the feedback we've received from our customers to offer even greater creative flexibility, and to help our customers enjoy the pleasure of taking better pictures," said a Canon spokesperson.

The EOS 350D maximises the performance potential of the CMOS sensor by incorporating Canon's new proprietary DiG!C II high-speed image processor. Due to the significant reduction in power consumption over the EOS 300D, the new model now uses a lighter, more compact battery, the NB-2LH, while still capturing the same number of images as its predecessor.

Canon's EOS 350D offers users JPEG and RAW file compression, with simultaneous recording possible. For fast and simple image download, the EOS 350D incorporates a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface, while printing up to A3 size and beyond is as simple as connecting the camera to a compatible Canon Direct Print or PictBridge-enabled printer.
The feature upgrades of the EOS 350D were driven predominantly by feedback from users of earlier digital EOS cameras. Canon's popular Command Dial is now raised and knurled, enabling simple selection of the preset shooting modes. Five Creative Zone modes offer complete creative control, while the 35-zone evaluative metering with user-selectable metering patterns ensures high exposure accuracy.
Supporting these advanced features, the EOS 350D utilises a 7-point wide area autofocus (AF), with superimposed AF points displayed in the viewfinder. Additionally, the EOS 350D now incorporates flash exposure bracketing, selectable autofocus and selectable metering modes. Nine custom functions with 24 settings for shooting preferences bring even more enthusiast and professional features within range of keen photographers.
Users can achieve even greater creative control through Canon's critically accurate E-TTL II flash metering with lens distance information for exposure consistency. E-TTL II flash metering is able to compensate for highly reflective areas in a scene, providing outstanding flash exposure stability when combined with Canon's EX-Series Speedlites.
