Ford has unveiled a new Fusion at the Detroit Auto Show. Known as the Mondeo in some markets, the Fusion receives a new twin-turbocharged V6, a pedestrian detection system for North America, and updates to the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models to go along with two new trim levels.

The engine lineup for the new 2017 Ford Fusion includes three EcoBoost engine options, including a new twin-turbocharged four-cylinder for the new Fusion V6 Sport model. This model features all-wheel drive that Ford says is performance-tuned to deliver more torque and horsepower than rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 will deliver 327 horsepower (244 kW) and 350 pound-feet (474 Nm) of torque. Active suspension dampers and other technologies, including a "pothole detection system" will further enhance the performance of the Fusion Sport model. The other two EcoBoost engines to be offered are powering the current model Fusion.

The two hybrid models of the Fusion will continue in 2017 with the Fusion Hybrid going forward with the same powertrain it uses now, a 2.0-liter Atkinson-style engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Fusion Energi will continue as the plug-in hybrid option for the sedan and also continues forward with its present powertrain. Software upgrades for both hybrids, however, will improve drive dynamics. New electric motors will replace the current motors used in the hybrids, which should improve all-electric range and fuel economy in both electrified Fusion models.

Added to the Fusion trim line will be a new Platinum grade in addition to the Sport model. The Platinum option will be the premium option for the Fusion and will add all-wheel drive as an option to the car outside of the Sport model. Trim points such as antiqued Cocoa and Venetian leathers, Magnetic paint for the grille, and exclusive 19-inch polished wheels will set the Platinum grade apart from others in the line.

New to the 2017 Ford Fusion / Mondeo is a rotary shifter to replace the traditional lever-style shifter for the automatic transmissions and CVTs in the new Fusion

Underneath the bodywork, added technology options infuse the new Fusion. The 2017 model year will mark the first year that Ford has offered a pedestrian detection system in North America. It will be an option in the Fusion. Hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking will continue to be offered. Several updates to safety systems such as lane-keeping and blind spot monitoring are also planned for the new Fusion. This includes the addition of an optional Sync 3 update.

The 2017 Ford Fusion will enter North American dealerships this summer and will appear globally shortly thereafter. The Fusion V6 Sport will come later in the year.
