The excellence embodied by Duesenberg automobiles gave us the expression "It's a doozy"... and this one certainly is. The 1930 Duesenberg Model J Sport Berline sold for a touch over US$1.7 million at the 12th annual RM Auctions Automobiles of Amelia Island auction in Florida last weekend. A second 1932 Convertible Coupe Model J fetched $825,000 in an auction that saw four cars break the million dollar barrier.

The 1930 Duesenberg Model J from the estate of American collector, the late Mr. John O'Quinn, was built by Californian coachbuilders Murphy Inc. Its 420 cu. in., four valves per cylinder twin overhead camshaft inline eight-cylinder engine produces 265 bhp, but obviously it's not really about horsepower, it's about a gorgeous slice of engineering and automotive history.

The Duesenberg topped the auction results list ahead of three Ferraris - a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta ($1,650,000), a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Alloy Berlinetta ($1,265,000) and a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder ($1,017,500).

Also among the 54 cars offered for sale from the Quinn Collection was a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe ($687,500), a 1935 Auburn 851SC Speedster ($418,000) and a unique 1964 Pontiac Bonneville Custom Convertible built for Hank Williams Jr.

All-in-all, 112 vehicles crossed the block at Amelia Island, raking in a total of more than $19 million.
