Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) will attempt to set a new lap record for an electric vehicle at the legendary Nürburgring later this month. The attempt will be made in the TMG 100 percent electric car that is based on a two-seater sportscar chassis fitted with a high-performance electric powertrain developed by TMG. With a top speed of 260 km/h (161.5 mph) and the ability to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds, the vehicle will be looking to better the current EV lap record of 9 minutes 1.1338 seconds set earlier this year by the Peugeot EX1.
Including its lithium-ceramic battery, the total weight of the TMG EV is 970 kg (2,138.4 lb), which TMG says gives it the nimble handling essential for setting a competitive lap record on the demanding 20.832 km (12.94 miles) Nordschleife ("Northern Loop"). TMG says the vehicle's electric powertrain, which uses two electric motors to deliver peak power of 280 kW, is ideal for any future single-make electric motorsport series with the company planning to begin commercial sales of its electric powertrain technology next year.
"We want to demonstrate the high level of performance which can now be reached with an electric powertrain, not only in motorsport terms but as part of TMG's existing development work on road car EV technology," said Ludwig Zeller, TMG General Manager Electric & Electronics. "There is no more evocative place to illustrate this performance than on the Nordschleife.
"Our target is to beat the existing record by more than just a few seconds because that will demonstrate just how far our technology has developed since TMG began working on KERS systems in 2007. Many people are still dreaming of an electric future for motorsport; at TMG we believe this is much closer than some think and we intend to show what can be achieved with a high-performance electric powertrain," Zeller added.
TMG will make its lap record attempt on August 29. We'll keep you posted.
