Only 999 SP.01's will be built

High-performance electric cars have been around for some years now, but despite the fact that Detroit and the electric car go back a long way, no all-electric supercars have been built in the Motor City. That is, until now. After giving us a bit of a tease last month, Detroit Electric has taken the wraps off its Limited-edition SP.01. According to its maker, the SP.01 is not only the “first pure electric sports car” to come out of Detroit, but it's also reportedly the fastest, and the first to be fully integrated with a smartphone.  Read More

After the pomp and civility of the New York Auto Show, it’s nice for automotive manufacturers to take a break, get some air, break 265 mph, hit the spa, etc. And so it would be that on a bleak Californian airstrip, that some brave individual in a very much modified machine would hurtle himself down an airforce grade runway to a speed of 265.7 mph (426.7 km/h), making the Hennessey Venom GT the fastest production car on the planet.  Read More

Weber Sportcars promised to unseat the Bugatti Veyron as the world’s fastest street-legal sports car with its Faster One (F1) back in 2008. A cheese-powered dragster designed by researchers at Utah State University (USU) set a new speed record for a vehicle of its type, reaching a shade over 65 mph (104 km/h) at the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association's 2012 World of Speed event in September. No prize Stilton was wasted in the pursuit of glory however, as the vehicle runs on yeast biodiesel derived from the industrial waste of cheese production.  Read More

University of Denver engineering graduate student Eva Håkansson pushed her home-built electric sidecar motorcycle "KillaJoule" to just over 216 mph (347 km/h) last week, while setting a new world record for electric sidecar bikes at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials at Bonneville Salt Flats. The top speed comes achingly close to the fastest record ever set with an internal combustion engine for a bike of that type: 219 mph (352 km/h).  Read More

Cycling legend Graeme Obree hopes his latest innovation will not only break the human-powe...

Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree is building a special sort of bicycle. He's building it in his own kitchen without a lick of research assistance to inform the design. Why might research assistance be useful? Because with this bicycle, dubbed Beastie, Obree intends not only to break the human-powered vehicle land speed record, but also hopes to be the first person to break 100 mph (161 km/h). But then, Obree's never been one to do things the easy way.  Read More
