The World’s Smallest RC Helicopter for US$100

November 1, 2006 The lines between manpackable UAVs for the military and high end Radio Controlled toys blurred some time ago, and when we saw the latest toy from Interactive Toy Concepts, we began to wonder just how far this trend might go, given the trend towards miniaturisation of everything. The Micro Mosquito is claimed to be the Worlds smallest, lightest and quietest full function indoor R/C helicopter and weighs only 15 grams – that’s hellishly impressive, but the startling bit is the retail price of just over US$100. We’re sure it’s not the smallest, because military contractors around the world no doubt have much smaller versions in the labs – but this one does have the advantage of being available on retail shelves within the next few weeks and is certain to be there only a short while.  Read More

Casio reclaims the title of world's smallest GPS watch

August 23, 2006 Casio was the first watch manufacturer to create a wristwatch with a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) way back in June, 1999 with the release of the SATELLITE NAVI as the top model of the outdoor watch series, PROTREK. It created a new genre of wrist worn devices but alas, in the ensuing seven years, the likes of Garmin, Suunto and Timex have come out with smaller, more elegant wrist worn GPS solutions but as of September 30, Casio will be back with the smallest GPS watch available in the form of the GPR-100 priced at JPY54,000 (USD$464). To achieve its goal, Casio has had to develop a “microminiature high sensitivity GPS reception antenna of length 19mm” and a small advanced GPS module (11mm-12mm). The result is the world’s lightest GPS watch, weighing just 64 grams, and the world’s smallest GPS watch at 63.1mm x 49.5mm x 17.1mm.  Read More

The world's smallest and lightest 1080 HDV Camcorder

August 4, 2006 If you’re one of those people who bellyache all the time about having just purchased a widget for US$1000 only to find that the next model will cost less and do twice as much, just remember that we’re living through the most exciting period of technological progress in human history. Indeed, it’s unlikely that there will ever be such a quantum leap in understanding, productivity and creativity again in history. What’s brought on this soapboxing? Canon’s HV10 HD Camcorder – that’s what! It’s a 500g camcorder capable of 1080 HD (high definition) video and it’s roughly the size of a cigarette packet at 56x104x106mm. The HV10 HDV includes 10x optical zoom, Super Range Optical Image Stabilization, the DIGIC DV II image processor, and a Full HD resolution (1920x1080 video) CMOS sensor, similar to those found in Canon's Digital SLR cameras. Additionally, new "Instant AF" auto-focus technology, and the ability to take 3.1 megapixel photos, makes this one powerful device that fits comfortably in the palm of the hand. Scheduled to land in stores in September, the Canon HV10 HDV camcorder is a veritable "Best of" compilation of Canon technologies, and will sell for an estimated US$1299.  Read More

World's smallest and lightest foldable bicycle

June 26, 2006 Fold-up bikes are certainly not new though none to date have deserved the moniker “portable”. Most use the same heavy chain sets and bulky 16 to 20 inch wheels and traditional materials and are at best luggable. The A-Bike is a folding pushbike that is claimed to be small enough so that you can take it on public transport with a no-bicycles policy. The US$300 A-bike utilises automotive grade, engineering polymers for its structural components, saddle and handlebars and has a level of stiffness, fatigue and impact resistance comparable with aero-grade aluminium. By using these new materials, the A-bike’s weight has been reduced to just 5.5 kg (12 lbs), which is manageable for even slightly-built individuals. Whatsmore, it can be folded inside 10 seconds into a compact 26” x 12” x 6” (66 x 30 x 15 cm) package and has pneumatic tyres, so riding it will not dislodge the fillings in your teeth. In our opinion, the A-Bike looks to be the first viable foldable bike for those who wish to mix modes of transport and we see it as invaluable for yachts and motorhomes and campers where a simple vehicle for short-distances is a boon but storage space is limited.  Read More

World's Smallest and Lowest Power WiFi Chipset Solution

June 19, 2006 The impetus of convergence grew today when Swedish company Nanoradio secured funding to ramp the volume manufacture of its first generation low power NRX700 WiFi chipset for portable electronic devices. With a total die size of only 20mm2 the NRX700 has both the smallest footprint and the lowest power consumption in the market in transmit, receive and stand-by modes. Most importantly, the WLAN single chip System in Package (SIP) makes high speed wireless access possible in mobile phones, MP3 players, handheld computing devices, PDAs, Mobile gaming platforms, digital video and still cameras and headsets. Probably the biggest short term effect will be to accelerate Voice over IP and fixed to cellular telephone convergence, as well as the revolution in media content transforming to digital mobile media supported by standards such as UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). This is big, even if it’s well disguised.  Read More

The world’s smallest hydrogen car hits the showroom floor

May 19, 2006 Educational toys are a gift that keeps giving for a whole lifetime and every now and again we see a toy that makes the perfect educational gift. It’s no secret that the hydrogen economy is dawning and hydrogen fuel cells will play a major role in the future energy equation of the planet. Similarly, 75% of the jobs which school age children will do have not yet been invented. Add all that together and its an unavoidable conclusion that the H-racer offers a compelling gift for any child at just US$80. The H-Racer hits the market next month as the world’s smallest hydrogen car and comes with its own matching Hydrogen Refueling Station. As a toy, it is a simple construction kit (no soldering required) within a valuable educational context. As a promotional gift, it combines concept, design and practicality, allowing observation of the car’s fuel tank filling up with Hydrogen. As a new energy kit, the car clearly demonstrates how to obtain unlimited storable fuel from just water and sun, then powering a car with it using a fuel cell. Manufacturer Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies makes a range of commercial and industrial fuel cell products and is hence seeking international distribution partners.  Read More
