Professor J.C. Chiao and his postdoc Dr. Smitha Rao of the University of Texas at Arlington have developed a MEMS-based nickel alloy windmill so small that 10 could be mounted on a single grain of rice. Aimed at very-small-scale energy harvesting applications, these windmills could recharge batteries for smartphones, and directly power ultra-low-power electronic devices.  Read More

The development of graphene based nanoelectromechanical systems could lead to even slimmer...

A team of engineers from Columbia University has created a nano-mechanical system with the ability to create FM radio signals. In other words, they've built what is effectively the world’s smallest FM radio transmitter.  Read More

The tiny eCompass chip provides magnetometer and accelerometer capabilities (Image: STMicr...

STMicroelectronics has announced a new MEMS-based module that integrates a three-axis magnetometer, a three-axis accelerometer, A/D converters, and control logic on a 2 mm x 2 mm x 1 mm surface mount chip, reportedly making it the smallest electronic compass available today.  Read More

The Nano-Falcon easily sits in the palm of your hand

Namco Bandai subsidiary CCP toys has launched its Nano-Falcon remote-controlled helicopter toy, which it claims is the world's smallest. The Nano-Falcon, which is designed for indoor flight, has a body size of just 6.5 cm (2.5 in) long and weighs a scant 11 g (0.38 oz). The infrared controller, which takes four AA alkaline batteries, has a range of just 5 m (16 ft), which may be a good thing, lest you lose sight of it!  Read More

A frame from 'A Boy and His Atom'

Anyone who’s tried their hand at stop animation will know it’s an incredibly time consuming and delicate job. But spare a thought for scientists at IBM Almaden in California who have produced the world’s smallest stop animation movie by using a scanning tunneling microscope to move individual atoms. Rather than competing with Aardman or Pixar for a slice of the international box office, the film is intended to make the public aware of new technology that could increase computer memories far beyond what is possible today.  Read More

Sony's 20-megapixel Cyber-shot HX50V compact superzoom

Given the ubiquitous nature of smartphones and the ever-increasing megapixel count of their onboard camera sensors, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the compact digital camera may have snapped its very last snap. Sony believes that its new Cyber-shot HX50V superzoom will make you think again. Claimed to be the world's smallest and lightest 30x zoom camera currently available, the low light sensitive 20-megapixel camera features both Wi-Fi and GPS, high-speed AutoFocus, optical image stabilization, and boasts an impressive battery life.  Read More

The Canon EOS 100D (Rebel SL1) is the world's smallest APS-C DSLR

Canon has revealed two new DSLRs – the EOS 100D and the EOS 700D (or Rebel SL1 and Rebel T5i depending on where you are in the world). Billed as the world’s smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR camera, the 100D still manages to pack in an 18 megapixel APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm) sensor and a touchscreen on the rear. The 700D is a more advanced, and traditionally-sized, entry-level model which can shoot at 5 fps, and has a wide 9-point all cross type AF system and touchscreen LCD.  Read More

Two Nanoblimps, engaging in aerial warfare in an office

Instead of shelling out for a complete radio-controlled plane, why not just add a powered propeller and steerable rudder to a paper plane of your own? That’s the thinking behind PowerUp Toys’ PowerUp 3.0 kit. Now, Canada’s Plantraco MicroFlight has applied that same sort of thinking to blimps. The resulting Nanoblimp, billed as “the world’s smallest RC blimp,” uses a plain ol’ party-variety helium balloon as its gas envelope.  Read More

The ASUS WL-330NUL Pocket Router

ASUS has announced the forthcoming release of what is being hailed as the smallest router produced to date. The WL-330NUL Pocket Router is just a bit longer than an AA-sized battery, includes an integrated USB 2.0 connector and cable that fold into the side of the body, and offers both wired and wireless connectivity for your notebooks, tablets and smartphones.  Read More

Lenovo has announced the successor to last year's IdeaCentre Q180 desktop computer, the Id...

About this time last year, Lenovo made a bid for the title of creator of the world's smallest desktop PC, with the launch of the IdeaCentre Q180. Now, an equally diminutive replacement is making a grab for the very same title. The IdeaCentre Q190 is reported to offer up to 80 percent faster processing performance over last year's model, is available with double the system memory, and up to 1 TB of HDD storage.  Read More
