Gizmag takes a stroll through the woods with the latest in naturally inclined technology

We may be surrounded by gadgetry clad in shiny aluminum and gaudy plastic, but there's still a place left in the digital age for the comfort, simplicity and beauty of wood. Perhaps its the trend towards a "green" aesthetic or some deeper drive to get back to nature, but we've noticed a growing number of consumer electronics offerings in recent times that mesh circuit boards and synthetics with the wonders of wood. With this in mind, we've scoured our resources to come up with this list of Gizmag's top ten wooden gadgets.  Read More

The Hyperion lamp (Photo: Paul Heijnen)

There aren't enough stop motion animation films starring light fittings, in my opinion. Until today, I only knew of one: Luxo Jr, by Pixar. Hyperion is the second, and it stars the eponymous insectoid light fitting, designed by Paul Heijnen.  Read More

Not long ago, we heard about how Dutch artist Jurgen Kuipers built a version of his Sawyer wooden-framed bicycle that could be sold flat-packed, like IKEA furniture. While that particular bike was intended as a one-off art piece, it turns out that we may soon be able to own a flat-packed wooden Dutch bike after all – the Sandwichbike, created by Amsterdam-based industrial design studio Bleijh, is now available for pre-order.  Read More

Woody Scorcher is handmade using steam-bent ash (Photo: Connor Wood Cycles)

An increasing number of bicycle manufacturers are proving that a bike doesn’t necessarily need to be built from metal, and cardboard, bamboo, and even plywood have all been used with apparent success. With this in mind, the latest unusual bicycle to pop-up on our radar is Woody Scorcher, by Denver-based Connor Wood Cycles – a wooden bike that aims to combine form and function into a rideable work of art.  Read More

The Sawyer is a lowrider cruiser bicycle, with a frame built from beech plywood

There was a time when wooden-framed bicycles were quite the oddity. While you still don’t see them much in stores, it’s now not that unusual to come across models such as the Lagomorph or Renovo’s duo bikes on the internet. The Sawyer, however, is a little different – it’s a lowrider cruiser bike, that’s quite obviously built from flat sheets of beech plywood.  Read More

Furnitecture: the Bunkie (Image: BLDG Workshop/608 Design)

You can erect a prefab shed in a remote field, but that doesn't make it a house. Mercifully, Nathan Buhler of BLDG Workshop and Evan Bare of 608 Design are more circumspect when it comes to their collaborative effort, the Bunkie. Talking to Gizmag, Buhler said that he thinks of the design more as a large product than as small-scale architecture. Effectively a spare room you can put in your yard, we think that's bordering on understatement.  Read More

Designed as a deliberate counterpoint to the cold metal, plastic and glass aesthetic of most modern technology, Robbie Tilton's take on Apple's wireless keyboard is instead fabricated from wood and moss. The production methods used are bang up to date, however.  Read More
