At long last, Volkswagen has whipped the covers off its e-up! and e-Golf electric automobiles, at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Volkswagen claims that the e-up sets a new efficiency standard, consuming 11.7 kWh of electrical energy every 100 km (62 miles) for a cost of €3.02 (US$4). With big changes likely in the global transport infrastructure, the race is on to create the missing link – the smallest, lightest man-packable form of motorized transport yet known. Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW and Nissan have all shown vehicles in this area, but none have yet hit the market.
