Gizmag compares eight of today's best-known actioncams

There was a time when there were only a few actioncams on the market, made by companies like VIO and Oregon Scientific. In the past several years, however, the product category has exploded. GoPro may have led the charge, but it's by no means the only player on the field. In order to help buyers make a little more sense of all the choices, here's a side-by-side comparison of eight of today's more prominent actioncams.  Read More

The Drift Ghost-S, with remote

Drift Innovation first brought us the HD170 actioncam, followed by the smaller Drift HD, and then the upgraded Drift HD Ghost. Now it's taken another step forward, with the Drift Ghost-S.  Read More

Gizmag takes a turn behind the joysticks of DJI's new Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter

It was less than two weeks ago that DJI Innovations released its Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter, the camera-equipped successor to its popular Phantom model. Since then, I've received a review unit from the company, which I've had a few chances to try out – between snowfalls and high winds, that is. My verdict? It's awesome, despite a couple of surprising shortcomings.  Read More

DJI Innovations' new Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter

DJI Innovations unveiled its GPS-enabled Phantom quadcopter less than a year ago, and since then it has become perhaps the go-to aerial platform for the GoPro HERO actioncam. In April, the company provided us with a sneak peek at the next model in the line, the Phantom 2 Vision. While there weren't many details available at the time, that's changed as of today, with the Vision's official commercial release. Among its new features are improved battery life, a video-stabilizing platform and most significant of all, an included HD video camera that allows for first-person-view via a mobile device.  Read More

The 'mind-reading' neurocam prototype

Perhaps you know someone who's a member of the "lifelogging" community – these are people who record pretty much all of their waking hours, typically using small, wearable video cameras. The problem is, they inevitably end up with a lot of footage that's just ... well, boring, even to them. That's where the neurocam comes in. It's a prototype headset camera, that only records when it detects that its wearer is interested in what they're seeing.  Read More

The Edgertronic high speed video camera has reached its funding target on Kickstarter

Whether it's a bursting water balloon or the flapping wings of a bird, super slow-motion video can reveal the incredible nature of seemingly mundane events. But this footage doesn't come cheap. With typical set-ups costing in excess of US$30,000, its use is often limited to those with mega-budgets. The Edgertronic high speed video camera aims to to change that, by offering pro specs with a (relatively) affordable price-tag.  Read More

GoPro's drive to make its Hero actioncams smaller and lighter continues with the release of the new Hero3+ line. With the Black edition, adventurous videographers can capture the fun at up to 4K resolution, while the Silver model offers 1080p HD video recording at up to 60 fps.  Read More

The Sony HDR MV1 Music Video Recorder is optimized for recording and sharing musical perfo...

Given that we're living in the Age of YouTube, it's becoming pretty much standard practice for up-and-coming musicians to post videos of their jam sessions or live performances online. And while the affordability of HD video cameras/phones may mean that the visuals in those videos look nice, music is first and foremost an auditory art-form. That's why Sony is introducing a new musical-performance-specific camcorder, known appropriately enough as the HDR-MV1 Music Video Recorder.  Read More

Toshiba's new Camileo X-Sports actioncam, with its included helmet mount

Toshiba has gone and thrown its hat (or helmet, perhaps) into the actioncam ring. Today at IFA 2013, the company unveiled its new Camileo X-Sports model. The rugged little camcorder bears more than a passing resemblance to the GoPro HERO, although it boasts one extra key feature – a built-in 2-inch LCD viewfinder/playback screen.  Read More

Sony's new 4K Handycam at IFA 2013

The ability to shoot Ultra HD 4K video is no longer limited just to cinema- or broadcast-specific video cameras – or to the GoPro HERO3 Black edition, for that matter. Today at IFA 2013, Sony unveiled the FDR-AX1E, which is the first of the company’s 4K-capable Handycams.  Read More
