Well, Elon Musk can relax now. Having previously announced his intention to at least build a Hyperloop demonstrator, he now appears relieved to leave that task to HTT (Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Inc). HTT is an engineering startup company operating under the wing of California-based JumpStartFund. It has developed basic organization and operational plans, as well as having established key partnerships to help navigate a path to a working Hyperloop.  Read More

Last year, Acton, Inc. made quite an impression with its spnKiX motorized skates, and it looks like the company has even more personal vehicles in the works. Recently the company revealed a new electric motorbike called the M Scooter, which the company claims can fold up into about half its size for easier storage. Besides being a more compact and eco-friendly form of transport, Acton estimates that its electric scooter will cost less than US$0.10 per day to drive under normal use.  Read More

The S-Walker Board combines aspects of a Segway, a balance board and a skateboard

Although it’s the major automotive manufacturers and their no-expense-spared world premieres that dominate IAA, German company S-Walker is holding a somewhat smaller-scale world premiere for its S-Walker Board. Combining aspects of a Segway, a skateboard and a balance board, the two-wheeled electric vehicle is set to hit the streets in the not-too-distant future.  Read More

The Taxi of Tomorrow is being built today

Well, it’s official: this is the future. It must be, as the Nissan NV200-based “Taxi of Tomorrow” is now being manufactured. The vehicle marks the culmination of a project run by the Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York City, in which taxi drivers, owners and passengers were asked to submit ideas for what features should go into a purpose-built NYC taxi cab.  Read More

The US Department of Energy will be using fuel cells to power the refrigeration units of f...

The refrigeration units used in cold transport trailers are typically powered by small diesel engines, which use up non-renewable fuel and release greenhouse gases, just like their big brothers. The US Department of Energy, however, is looking into an alternative. As part of a two-year pilot project, it’s equipping four such trailers with clean-running hydrogen fuel cells.  Read More

Design sketches of Elon Musk's proposed Hyperloop high-speed tube transport system

Now that the media kerfuffle surrounding Elon Musk's Hyperloop transit system proposal has settled down to a dull roar, it's a good time to step back and consider in detail some of the real innovations and difficult issues raised through analysis of the 57-page Hyperloop plan.  Read More

Tern claims that the S18 offers a rigid ride, even for larger riders

Folding bicycles can be a convenient option for those with limited storage space or whose trips partially involve another form of transport. Of course, a folding bike frame usually comes with some performance compromises but Taiwanese folding bike manufacturer Tern has a new bike that it believes can "redefine the folding bicycle category" with no compromise to performance. The Eclipse S18 also offers a number of integrated technologies, including a self-powered lighting system and seat post pump.  Read More

In a telephone press conference this morning, Elon Musk, the many-faceted founder of PayPal, Tesla Motors, and SpaceX, expanded his earlier Hyperloop reveal by announcing that he will develop and construct a Hyperloop demonstrator. He believes that a properly funded consortium would take about seven years to build a commercial Hyperloop.  Read More

Elon Musk has revealed the design and details of his proposed Hyperloop transit system

He may be the man behind PayPal, Tesla Motors and SpaceX, but Elon Musk has been garnering more attention lately for his proposed Hyperloop transit system. Although virtually no details had previously been announced, Musk has stated that it would serve as a much faster, more efficient alternative to traditional passenger rail transport – more specifically, it would allow passengers to travel the 350 miles (563 km) from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just 30 minutes. Well, this afternoon (as promised) he finally let everyone in on just what it would be, and how it would work.  Read More
