For the last few years, Puzzlebox has been publishing open source software and hacking guides that walk makers through the modification of RC helicopters so that they can be flown and controlled using just the power of the mind. Full systems have also been custom built to introduce youngsters to brain-computer interfaces and neuroscience. The group is about to take the project to the next stage by making a Puzzlebox Orbit brain-controlled helicopter available to the public, while encouraging user experimentation by making all the code, schematics, 3D models, build guides and other documentation freely available under an open-source license.  Read More

The TechJect Dragonfly fits in the palm of a hand

Given their impressive flight capabilities, it’s not surprising to see researchers turning to the world of flying insects for inspiration when developing new kinds of micro UAVs. With their ability to both fly at high speeds and hover, the dragonfly would seem an obvious candidate for biomimicry. But with the exception of the DelFly, we hadn’t seen many attempts to model a micro UAV on the dragonfly’s four wing design. Much to the annoyance of home-owners everywhere, cockroaches are amazingly tough, and they’re able to squeeze into remarkably small spaces. These are some of the same qualities that researchers would like to see in tiny reconnaissance robots that could perform tasks such as searching earthquake-damaged buildings for survivors. Such adaptable, robust mini-robots would be quite challenging to create, however. Technology for televisions is advancing all the time, with TVs getting bigger, offering glasses-free 3D, and even being powered by bicycle these days. Sony's Xperia Tablet S joins the Xperia stable

Previously reserved for smartphones, Sony has extended its Xperia line to include tablets with the unveiling of the Xperia Tablet S at IFA 2012. The successor to the Tablet S (originally known as the S1) released last year, the new tablet is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM and comes running Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich), with Sony promising an upgrade to 4.1 (Jellybean) in the future.  Read More
