Projectors

The 3M Streaming Projector is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand

The world seems to be moving away from projectors. Almost all of the tech-savvy consumer's content is downloaded digitally and streamed to TVs, tablets and smartphones. The projector is kind of lost in the shuffle of all of this. Enter 3M's Streaming Projector, which merges the massive display sizes that only a projector can produce, with the streaming content for which Roku is known.  Read More

The prototype picoprojector, which incorporates the new polarizing technology (Photo: Imag...

Liquid crystal video projectors could be getting smaller, more energy-efficient, and less expensive. Currently, such devices require polarized light for the projection of images. Unfortunately, conventional LEDs only produce unpolarized light. While an optical filter is typically used to polarize it, the polarization process wastes over 50 percent of the original light, converting it into heat instead of allowing it to pass through. That heat, in turn, must be dissipated using a noisy, power-consuming fan. Now, however, researchers have created a new polarizing system that allows almost 90 percent of the LED light to be converted to usable, polarized light.  Read More

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a system that uses bubbles as a kind...

If you ever thought of soap bubbles as small floating movie capsules, you were not alone in your observation. Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a system that uses such bubbles as kind of projection screen based on colloidal liquids. The bubbles are made of a thin film, and allow light to create a reflection on one section before passing through other sections. If the reflection can be controlled, then the bubble can be used as a display.  Read More

The Sony VPL-VW1000ES is the world's first 4K home cinema projector

While 1080p has barely had time to establish itself as the standard for high definition video in the home, its replacement is already making its presence felt. Panasonic provided a glimpse of our ultra high resolution future with its 152-inch 4K resolution plasma TV at CES in 2010, but now Sony has become the first company to release a 4K home cinema projector that offers four times the resolution of existing 1080p displays.  Read More

The Fraunhofer smartphone projector actually consists of an array of 200 microprojectors

If you were using a smartphone projector to shine an image onto an uneven surface, or onto a flat surface but at a diagonal angle, parts of the image would end up out of focus ... unless, that is, your phone featured a new prototype LED projector developed by Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering. Inspired by the compound eyes of insects, the device can reportedly display crisp, bright, distortion-free visuals onto irregular surfaces, and at non-perpendicular angles. Additionally, users can manipulate that display by reaching in and touching the projection surface.  Read More

The TL1 and its 180 degree display

What happens when you bring together cutting edge gaming technology and a legendary automotive company? The answer is one of the most powerful home racing simulators money can buy, the TL1. Motion Simulation has joined forces with the U.K. automaker behind the Ariel Atom, creating a simulator in a class of its own, featuring near panoramic projectors, and a custom built racing cockpit designed in conjunction with the experts from Ariel.  Read More

It may not look like much when not in use, but that's your ticket to hologram-like communi...

Remember all those science fiction movies and television shows that depicted people in a future time, talking to life-sized holographic images? That time is now. A research team from Queen's University in Ontario has developed a video communications system that allows you to speak with an eerie three-dimensional representation of the person on the other end of the line.  Read More

Acer's H6500 projector features a brightness of 2,100 ANSI lumens

Acer's latest home projector boasts the ability to display a 300-inch, 1080p projection at 24fps, but the main selling point of the US$900 H6500 is that, according to Acer, it's effective in bright ambient light by virtue of its 2,100 ANSI lumens brightness.  Read More

Alpha Bank City Day celebration show in Moscow (Photo: Christie)

So how do you show off the fact that you are Russia's largest private bank and at the same time curry a little favor with Moscow's ruling elite? You entertain 800,000 Muscovites with a world-record 25,500 square meter (275,000 sq. ft.) audio-visual projection show to celebrate Moscow City Day, of course.  Read More

A team of researchers have come up with a novel take on screen sharing inspired by traditi...

Researchers are investigating a means of virtually projecting images from handheld devices onto computer screens. Beyond simply being a means of screen sharing across devices, the research looks at traditional projection - physically shining a still or moving image onto a flat service - as a metaphor for multi-device interaction. In a video demo, researchers manipulate the "projected" image on the larger screen using iPhone accelerometer controls and gestures.  Read More
