Teardrops and trailer boxes dominated the exhibitor section of Overland Expo West 2016, but there were still plenty of larger vehicles on display around the show. We've compiled a full photo gallery of everything from basic pickup trailers with pop-up tents, to hulking commercial truck-sized shelters, to the accessories supporting those rigs. If you like off-roading, camping or old-fashioned road-tripping, it'll be hard not to find something you like.
The 2016 Knaus Sun i doesn't have the smooth, fluid style of the Caravisio, but Knaus' new flagship motorhome does share some high-tech inspiration with that 2013 caravan concept. Billed as the "best Knaus ever," the luxurious motorhome is packed with features and options, including smartphone lighting control and a slide-out outdoor TV with Bluetooth audio.
We've seen many a camper van designed to pull double duty, commuting around town during the week and venturing out to the forest or coast on weekends. Multipurpose campers like Hymer's own V-Class concept are typically built inside stock vans, but Hymer has taken a different route with its new "Van" series, planting its own foam-insulated aluminum cabin atop a bare chassis. The new Van S is aimed at versatility with its combination of comfy living space with bathroom and compact Mercedes Sprinter-based footprint.
"Modular" has been the buzzword in camper design of late. Modular designs certainly aren't an all-new phenomenon, but they did seem particularly popular throughout 2015. Several of our favorite motorhomes and caravans of the year featured removable/rearrangeable modules, as did one of our favorite car-camping innovations. German camper manufacturer Hymer has its own ideas about modularity, and they look pretty convincing in a camper van design study developed with Mercedes-Benz. Read More
We didn't see a camper quite as wild in 2015 as the seaplane camper we saw in 2014, but we have seen many a cool mobile living solution since we last compiled a list of our favorite RVs. New camper vans followed big events in the van market, including the launch of the Volkswagen T6 Transporter, US launch of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4, and discontinuation of full Ford E-Series vans. Beyond the Type Bs, there were also versatile expandable trailers and efficiently packaged roof- and chassis-top designs. Here are the coolest, most interesting motorhomes and camping trailers of 2015.
Stuffing an entire dwelling into a four-wheeled vehicle virtually always necessitates some comfort compromises. In an effort to create a more comfortable, livable space with less compromise, Canada's Leisure Travel Vans skips the usual convertible dinette set in favor of the new Leisure Lounge Plus. The cozy lounge area features multi-adjustable recliners, a fold-out table and a drop-down Murphy bed to better replicate the comfortable living, dining, sleeping and showering experiences of home.
We've just seen one Düsseldorf-debuted camper of the future work its way into the present, and now the Triaca Concept 230 presents another futuristic vision born at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon. Designed by Italy's Roller Team, the new study is an experimentation with a smarter, more eco-friendly breed of motorhome.Read More
We've spent a lot of time covering overland expedition vehicles of late thanks to the recent Overland Expo and Abenteuer und Allrad shows. The all-new Marq concept from Quantis GmbH may be our favorite of the bunch. An interesting blend of function and fashion, the prototype design features a clean, modern shell atop a rugged, military-style Land Rover Defender 130 chassis. It also has an efficient, versatile interior. This vehicle is ready to ride anywhere and everywhere and look pretty damn cool doing it. Read More
The all-new Horizon Multi Concept Vehicle isn't the first camper van based on the new Mercedes Vito – we've already seen the Terra Camper Tecamp, for one – but it is purportedly the first such camper made in the UK. The new camper van is designed to adeptly straddle the fence between everyday family van and holiday camper. A host of quick-converting interior amenities help it achieve that duality. Read More
