In November, Mercedes Benz took the wraps off its latest go at reviving the Maybach
marque and now it's handing out more details about the luxury sub-brand's S 500 and S 600. Less a car for driving than being driven in by your chauffeur, the new S-class features understated lines and is intentionally designed as a status symbol for the upper automotive crust.
Mercedes has used the 2015 Detroit Auto Show
to continue the expansion of its C-Class range, offering up a plug-in hybrid model to complement the C300 BlueTEC Hybrid and existing range of petrol and diesel engines. The C350 Plug-In Hybrid retains the standard C-Class' luxurious interior, but boasts a set of frugal fuel economy figures to challenge those of small-engined city-cars.
When you choose to debut a full concept car at the Consumer Electronics Show, rather than the looming international auto show a few days later, it's gotta be a piece of forward-looking, high-tech wizardry. The Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion is that and more. The car represents Mercedes' vision of a fully autonomous rolling lounge that envelops four passengers in technology and comfort.
Not only was 2014 a great year for sports concepts
, it was a great year for green cars. Environmentally friendly production cars like the Toyota Mirai
fuel cell vehicle and Volkswagen Golf GTE
made their debuts and numerous concepts provided a window into a cleaner commuting future, showcasing technologies that will get us from point A to point B without so much impact on the rest of the alphabet. Here are our favorite green concept cars from the year.
The problem with spending a day driving £300,000+ worth of cars is that driving home in your own worn out old banger makes a measured article tricky to write. Such is my issue having spent last Friday with three of Mercedes' top-end AMGs, the C300 BlueTEC Hybrid Saloon AMG Line – the S500 Plug-in Hybrid AMG Line L
and the S63 AMG Coupé
. So apologies in advance for any gushing.
Proof that priceless barn finds are still out there comes from France where elite auction house Artcurial has discovered the automotive equivalent of Tutankhamun’s tomb: 60 cars untouched for 50 years on a French farm included four Ferraris (and yes, a Ferrari California Spider), eight Delahayes, a Hispano Suiza H6B cabriolet Million-Guiet, a Maserati A6G Gran Sports and nine Talbot Lagos including four T26s, one a rare Grand Sport Aérodynamique, another a Saoutchik-bodied cabriolet formerly owned by King Farouk of Egypt. They're all for sale.
When BMW launched its X6
, the world's motoring press wondered if the Bavarian giant had finally gone insane. After all, who would want a coupe combined with an SUV? As it turns out, the X6 was popular enough to warrant a second generation, and the concept has also been applied to create the smaller X4
. Mercedes is also keen to get in on the coupe/SUV combo action with its new GLE Coupe.
Mercedes dominated the 2014 Formula One season, with a one-two in the Drivers Championship and a comfortable first placing in the Constructors Championship. To celebrate its success, the German manufacturer has created two special edition SL 63 AMG Roadsters – one dedicated to Lewis Hamilton, the other to Nico Rosberg. Just 38 will be built.
Mercedes continues to expand its lineup into new niches. The movement started in 2004 with the CLS four-door coupe
, and continued when the range expanded to include a shooting brake
model. Now, the CLA
range has followed suit, with the new compact CLA Shooting Brake, for people who want the practicality of a wagon coupled with the CLA's slick styling.
Mercedes has used China's Auto Ghangzhou show to revive the Maybach name on an ultra high-end S-Class. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 is a long-wheelbase, V12-powered flagship for the Mercedes range, and aims to offer a level of exclusivity beyond that offered by the standard S-Class range.
