There are very few LEED Platinum homes around – the green building standard's highest rating – and this scarcity becomes even more pronounced once you leave the US. Italian home BioCasa 82 boasts bragging rights for being the first private residence in Europe to achieve LEED Platinum, and as you'd expect, it's a very energy-efficient home, deriving 55 percent of all required energy from renewable sources.  Read More

A dedication ceremony took place at the World Trade Center site yesterday, marking the completion of the National September 11 Memorial Museum before it opens to the general public on May 21. President Obama was in attendance for the ceremony, which honored those killed in both the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the earlier February 26, 1993 bombing.  Read More

Danish architectural company 3XN has broken ground on an ambitious project in Mumbai that comprises two large sustainable mixed-use residential towers. Boasting an attractive intertwined design that brings to mind entangled trees, the plan is for Grove Towers to actually act almost like trees too – thanks to its sizable vertical gardens that are said to clean the local air.  Read More

Chinese architectural firm MAD has started work on an ambitious new project that aims to add some nature to inner-city Beijing. The Chaoyang Park Plaza comprises commercial, office, and residential buildings – all of which feature a degree of sustainable technology – and MAD hopes to achieve LEED Gold-certification once the project is completed in 2016.  Read More

US architectural firm Studio RMA recently completed the Hi’ilani EcoHouse: a two-family, low-energy property located on an attractive plot on Hawaii's Big Island. The building draws much of its required energy from renewable sources, and Studio RMA strove to offset the CO2 produced during construction by planting extensive forestry.  Read More

Architectural firm Perkins+Will has designed a new research campus for the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Completed in December, 2012, at a cost of US$31 million, the 54-acre (22-hectare) plot overlooks the ocean in East Boothbay, Maine, and has been awarded LEED Platinum status.  Read More

At this year's recent Dwell on Design event, LivingHomes unveiled its newly updated C6 series of prefabricated sustainable dwellings. Each of the three homes that comprise the C6 series are capable of achieving LEED Platinum certification, and can be outfitted with various optional extras to suit budget and needs.  Read More

The Change Initiative is Dubai's first retail store to focus its efforts solely on selling sustainable products and services, so it's not too surprising that its owners asked architectural firm HOK to make the premises as green as possible. However, what's remarkable, is that The Change Initiative is reportedly being hailed as the world's most sustainable building, when assessed according to the LEED standard.  Read More

Construction of Samsung's new Silicon Valley headquarters designed by architecture firm NBBJ has begun. The San Jose-based project will cover 1.1 million sq ft and feature a 10-story office tower, multiple garden areas, a green-walled parking complex, and a degree of sustainable technology, including solar power.  Read More

Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has announced it is planning to build a new tower block in downtown Calgary, Canada. The Telus Sky Tower, which BIG intends to have LEED Platinum certified, will feature a mixture of residential, office, and retail spaces, spread over 750,000 sq ft (70,000 sq m).  Read More
