Nissan has announced a new rear vision system that integrates a wide-aspect, hi-res LCD monitor with image processing into the traditional rearview mirror. The "smart" mirror provides clearer rearward visibility under adverse conditions, and enables the driver to switch between LCD and traditional mirror modes. The world record price for a car at auction was smashed this month when Juan Manuel Fangio's 1954 Mercedes W196 F1 Silver Arrow sold for US$30 million, doubling the previous auction record. The only W196 outside of Daimler Benz or an internationally-recognized museum, this car won its first two starts – the 1954 German GP at Nürburgring and the Swiss GP at the uber-frightening, tree-lined Bremgarten circuit – and sealed the 1954 World Drivers Title for Juan Manuel Fangio, statistically the best racing driver in history. The following year, it was released in roadgoing form to become the world's fastest road car: the legendary Mercedes 300 SLR (aka W196S).  Read More

The battle of the hybrid racing cars in World Endurance Racing took an interesting turn this weekend when Toyota's TS030 Hybrid won the fifth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The TS030 Hybrid uses a THS-R (Toyota Hybrid System - Racing) comprising a gasoline-burning 3.4 liter V8 engine and a 500 kJ Nisshinbo supercapacitor energy recovery unit which supplies power to the rear wheels. The Audi uses a turbocharged 3.7 liter V6 diesel engine with a 500 kJ electric flywheel accumulator to store recovered energy and feed it to the front wheels to create four-wheel-drive. It seems Audi has a worthy adversary in Toyota and the remainder of the season will be worth watching.  Read More
