Lawnmowers

The SmartMow development platform

RobotLabs has launched a KickStarter campaign to develop a robot lawnmower. Though that may not sound particularly new, the company claims other automated lawnmowers aren't true robots because they don't adhere to Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. In other words, they're not safe enough, RobotLabs claims. RobotLabs claims its SmartMow is different, shutting down almost instantaneously when people or animals get close.  Read More

Clean lines, simple design. John Deere's new E5

The options continue to expand for those of us who'd rather sit on a garden lounge than tackle the task of cutting copious tracts of lawn. Bosch has introduced its new robotic lawnmower, the Indego

Well, the Auto-Mower, Robby Garden XP, Evolution, and Robomow now have another competitor to content with – last month, Bosch launched its Indego autonomous lawnmower. Like existing “robo-mowers,” this one handles the cutting of the grass without human intervention, while its owner presumably lies nearby in a hammock with an iced tea and says things like “Now this is the life!”. According to Bosch, however, it also has a few features that make it special.  Read More

The Robby Garden XP robotic lawn mower

Kids could soon be looking for another way to make some pocket money with robotic lawn mowers such as the Husqvarna’s Automower Solar Hybrid robot mower now staking a claim for the job. The latest yard roaming mower to join the fray is the Robby Garden XP that uses its patented grass detection sensors to get the job done without the need to install a virtual perimeter wire. It also mulches as it goes to help fertilize the lawn and eliminate the need for post-mowing raking.  Read More

The Momentum Reel Mower makes tough patches less of a chore

"Green" mowers like the human-powered Mow Cycle are great for keeping that well manicured lawn along with a clear conscience. But there’s always the chance of running into a patch of particularly thick grass that makes push mowers that little bit less attractive. The Momentum Reel Mower tackles this shortcoming in an ingenious way - its InertiaDrive Technology (patent pending) stores energy like a flywheel to unleash a burst of extra cutting power when required.  Read More

Project Runningblade - the 100mph lawnmower

The world speed record for lawnmowers is currently 80mph, but Project Runningblade, launched at the UK’s Beaulieu National Motor Museum this week aims to raise it to more than 100mph using a highly-modified Countax-based machine. At that clip, it could cut an entire soccer pitch in 2 minutes and 42 seconds not to mention setting world records for both speed and eccentricity.  Read More

Husqvarna's electric Panthera Leo concept mower

Just when you thought that wildly overdone, highfalutin concept vehicles were the sole preserve of the automotive market, Husqvarna has dropped a lawnmowing bomb with its majestically named Panthera Leo concept ride-on mower. Using five inbuilt electric engines, it lets you quietly go about your lawn maintenance in the knowledge that you've brought a Gatling gun to a knife fight. Three individually suspended cutting heads can be spaced to your liking, there's an LCD dashboard with speed, cutting height, width and battery maintenance readouts and an object collision avoidance system - and it can rotate completely on the spot for total mowing precision.  Read More

Evatech's GOAT R/C mower

January 30, 2008 Humans love grass - an obsession that sees us spending an inordinate amount of time and effort tending to its needs. If you don't mind the time part, the Evatech GOAT radio-control mower can certainly help reduce the effort inherent in keeping your lawn manicured – and its hybrid petrol/electric motor gives it the power to pull a fertilizer spreader, climb 45 degree inclines, or even operate as a snowplow in winter.  Read More
