The Paper Airplane Machine Gun, providing covering fire

The ability to fold a reasonably functional paper airplane isn't something that everyone possesses. If you're one of those people, then perhaps this is what you need – a device that takes multiple flat pieces of ordinary paper, folds each one into an airplane, then shoots it into the air.  Read More

While legislative solutions to curbing gun violence in the US continue to meet fervent opposition, the Smart Tech Foundation, formed to incentivize free-market solutions to firearm safety, aims to take a different route. Through its Smart Tech for Firearms Challenge, it believes circumventing the political debate and fostering innovation in smart gun technology is a viable way to move toward a safer society.  Read More

The cyberpunk-esque Borderlands rifle

If you're a gamer, then you're no doubt already familiar with the first-person-shooter Borderlands. And if you're a regular Gizmag reader, then you've probably already seen some of the creations of German laser weapons hobbyist Patrick Priebe. Well, he's gone and created a real-life laser sniper rifle, based on the game.  Read More

Patrick Priebe's laser rifle could be one heck of a tool for highlighting things in a Powe...

German laser weapons hobbyist Patrick Priebe, the creator of such one-off curiosities as the Iron Man Gauntlet and the Crysis 2-inspired Gauss Rifle, has now gone and made a laser rifle. While it won't bring down a storm trooper or an alien facehugger, it'll make short work of things like wood, Styrofoam and glass.  Read More

Rubber Band Machine Gun

With its Rubber Band Machine Gun, or RBmG for short, XYZbot hopes to bring a new level of firepower to living room warfare. The wooden, battery-powered gatling gun is capable of unleashing devastation at a rate of 800 rounds (well, rubber bands) per minute and, should its crowd funding campaign prove successful, it'll ship as a build-it-yourself kit you can put together in half an hour.  Read More

Once a firearm is secured safely inside, the Gun Box unlocks with an RFID-equipped bracele...

We've been impressed with the new fingerprint-locking feature on the iPhone 5s lately, but there are many other items aside from your smartphone data that could use the extra security as well. Ryan Hyde recently designed a heavy-duty gun safe that ditches the usual key and combination locks in favor of a more protective electronic one. Once a firearm is secured safely inside, gun owners can unlock the Gun Box with an RFID-equipped bracelet (or ring), via a fingerprint scan, or a combination of the two.  Read More

It may be a relatively new sport, but there's been surprisingly little technological innovation in the world of paintball since it was created. Aside from a few modest enhancements, the basic gas-powered guns (also called markers) have remained about the same, but an upcoming product could change how the game is played entirely. The Strikeloader is a battery-operated backpack that feeds paintballs directly into a gun, eliminating the need for a regular loader while holding six times as much ammo.  Read More

An ordinary sofa might hide a pull-out bed or some drink holders, but a new piece of furniture from Heracles Research Corporation is designed to store an arsenal that John McClane would envy. Besides offering a comfy place to sit and watch TV, the CouchBunker conceals a large gun safe and provides some handheld shields with bullet-resistant cushions, just in case you find your living room under siege.  Read More

The Nerf Vulcan Sentry Gun automatically locates targets and unleashes a stream of foam da...

Anyone who plays video games will know that few things protect an area like a well-placed sentry gun. In the real world, though, even a person's bedroom or office could use a little protection sometimes, which is why one designer has built the Nerf Vulcan Sentry Gun. Using a custom program and some servos, the sentry can automatically locate targets and unleash a stream of foam darts at over seven times the usual speed, while keeping its owner out of the crosshairs.  Read More
