Anti-stick coating reduces F1 downforce losses

By - March 22, 2012 9 Pictures
In the last two years, UK coatings specialist Zircotec has helped 10 of the 12 Formula One teams to protect their composite diffusers from exhaust gasses via the use of ceramic coatings. To do so, it created a coating that allows composites to function in temperatures above their melting point! This year, its engineers have been busy on a new challenge, as debris from tires has been causing build-up on aerodynamic surfaces which has been reducing down-force. Read More

Ayrton Senna's Toleman TG184-2 F1 car up for sale

Ayrton Senna is one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time and his premature 1994 death created a scarcity which is driving memorabilia prices skyward. Earlier this year an ex-Senna helmet fetched US$100,000 at auction and now the car he drove in his debut season is to go to auction - the same car in which Senna drove his way into legend at the wet 1984 Monaco GP. Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 car and Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG launched together

By - February 28, 2012 56 Pictures
Mercedes-Benz took the unusual step of combining the unveiling of the 2012 Mercedes Petronas AMG W03 Formula One car with the launch of the AMG version of the new SL Roadster. This was probably quite a smart move. Although these F1 launches are good photo-ops there is always a severe lack of hard information, for understandable reasons. A new AMG however is always an interesting story - plus, ‘Shuey’ and Nico get to ferry a few privileged journos around the Barcelona F1 track. Extensive galleries of both the road and track cars included. Read More

Ferrari launches 2012 Formula One tilt with F2012

By - February 6, 2012 4 Pictures
With the northern Italian town of Maranello draped in snow, Ferrari Scuderia's launch of its 2012 F1 contender - the F2012 - had to rely on the internet. It may not have had the same pizzazz, but the show did go on. Along with repositioned radiators, the most obvious change is to the rear, where exhaust flows, both engine, radiator as well as aerodynamic air flows have been impacted by the new regulations that stipulate the exhausts must now exit within a very tight space at the rear of the car in order to minimize their aerodynamic influence. The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 team combines the strong driver pairing of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton for the third year running in 2012, along with a substantially revised car to meet the FIA's rule changes. The most noticeable change between last year and the new MP4-27 is at the rear, where tighter rear carbon-fiber composite body shaping has been designed to meet the new-for-2012 exhaust rules, whilst smoothing airflow to and from the coolant and oil radiators. Vettel takes his second F1 title for Red Bull

By - October 9, 2011 52 Pictures
Sebastian Vettel won his second World F1 drivers championship today, and although only taking third place in the Japanese Grand Prix, he is still on track for the most dominant season in F1 history. His third place at Suzuka gave him 324 of the 375 points on offer – a stunning 86.4% of available points and still ahead of Michael Schumacher's best during his reign with Ferrari. Like most other records in F1, Vettel is once again the youngest to achieve the feat. For Red Bull Racing, it's the team's second drivers title and it is closing in on the constructors title with a lead of 130 points and just four races to go. Perhaps more ominously, the team it has assembled, and the relationship with both Infiniti and engine-suppliers Renault looks more than capable of sustaining the success. Read More
