SipaBoard stand-up paddleboard uses a motor for extra speed – and to inflate itself

By - April 20, 2015 4 Pictures
While stand-up paddleboards are usually a lot of fun to use, they can be a hassle to transport and store. That's why we've seen ones that can be folded up and disassembled. The SipaBoard, however, takes yet another approach – it's inflatable. An onboard electric motor pumps the air into it for you, plus it also powers an integrated jet drive that provides paddlers with a boost. Read More

Klepper's solar-powered E-Kayak gives your arms a rest

By - February 26, 2015 9 Pictures
Paddling lakes, bays and rivers by kayak is a rewarding experience, but it can also be quite tiring. That's why Klepper offers paddlers the benefit of a solar-powered electric drive in its E-Kayak. The paddler can kick back and let the small motor take over the forward-floating load. The design adds a little modern-day technology and convenience to Klepper's classic folding kayak. Read More

NOX SV speedboat melds timeless wooden design with fast electric drive

By - January 27, 2015 9 Pictures
Most of the electric boats we saw at the Düsseldorf boat show this past weekend were small, slow cruisers designed to putter around waterways with combustion engine bans. One boat stepped well beyond that model, though. Still under development, the all-new NOX SV promises speeds up to 75 mph (120 km/h) from a highly capable 225-hp (168-kW) electric motor. The boat packs that cutting edge drivetrain into a classic mahogany hull with a D-Type-like racing fin thrown in for good measure. Read More

Sweden launches world's first quick-charging electric passenger ferry

By - April 29, 2014 2 Pictures
Sweden’s Green City Ferries is preparing to launch what it claims is the world’s first “supercharged” electric passenger ferry. Carrying 100 passengers between Solna Strand and Gamla Stan, the Movitz will need just 10 minutes to charge its batteries between 1-hour long service runs. That’s perfect for a ferry operation, because it means it’ll be charged by the time passengers have embarked and disembarked. With extremely low maintenance requirements and reduced running costs, the ferry will reportedly save some 50,000 litres of diesel and 130 tons of carbon emissions into the bargain. Read More

Frauscher 858 Fantom hits the water like a sports car of the sea

By - March 20, 2014 21 Pictures
It becomes difficult for boats to stand out when they're stuffed into an expo center segmented into row after row of seafaring vessels and marine hardware. Even massive yachts and striking boat concepts can start to look alike after a few passes through a boat show. One boat that did grab our attention at the Boot Dusseldorf show earlier this year is the new Frauscher 858 Fantom, a V8-powered craft inspired by German and Italian sports cars. Read More

As stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) continue to gain popularity, we're seeing something happen with them that always seems to happen with popular items – manufacturers are augmenting them. Just this week we heard about a modular SUP, which joins the ranks of ones that fold, and that can be converted into a tent. Now, Seattle-based Current Drives is offering an electric motor for SUPs, known as the ElectraFin. Read More

Alfastreet boats combine electric power with innovative hydraulic roof

By - February 18, 2014 22 Pictures
At last month's Boot Dusseldorf show, we learned two things about electric boats. One, there aren't that many of them, and two, those that are available tend to be on the small side – as evidenced by day cruisers like the Joyboat and Superiore Uno. The latter point was true save for one exception: the 23-foot (6.9 m) long Energy 23cs from Slovenia's Alfastreet Marine. The 23cs is an (optionally) electric boat with sleeping quarters, plus a few other tricks up its sleeve. Read More
