The Audi Mini Runner is a convertible kid's toy, being both a balance bike and a scooter

Certain brands command a following and a respect due to a long and illustrious history and/or consumer confidence in the quality of the products. Audi is one such company, so owning an Audi convertible is something many people can only dream of. That dream may become reality thanks to the Mini Runner, an Audi convertible that won't break the bank.  Read More

Caja Oscura was completed in 2012 (Photo: Pedro Kok)

Paraguayan home Caja Oscura, by local architects Javier Corvalán and Laboratorio de Arquitectura, consists of a basement structure, with a manually-operated tilting metal box placed atop. With no natural light available when the box is closed, this unusual dwelling is probably not suitable for those who fear being trapped in a small enclosed space, but it is arguably the perfect place to ride out the Apocalypse ...  Read More

Shark expert and marine biologist Luke Tipple navigated through shark infested waters

A convertible shark cage may be a complete oxymoron, but Volkswagen and partners have built one for Discovery Channel's upcoming Shark Week. More than just a stationary exhibit, the shark cage is a functioning watercraft with impressive capabilities. Gizmag talked to Luke Tipple, the marine biologist, shark diving expert and TV personality responsible for building and driving the craft, to find out more about what it's like to scooter around shark-infested waters in a skeletal Beetle ragtop.  Read More

2014 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante

A year ago, Aston Martin revived the Vanquish nameplate. Now it's sliced the roof off the coupe to bring the "thrill of open top motoring to the super GT class." If the Vanquish is "the best Aston ever," as Aston Martin calls it, it follows that the 2014 Vanquish Volante is the best Aston convertible.  Read More

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Car edition debuts in Shanghai

Bugatti has introduced the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Car limited edition. That's an awful mouthful for the name of a car – 254 mph (408.84 km/h) tells the story much more concisely, as does "world's fastest convertible." Just eight lucky multimillionaires will get to drive home in one of their very own.  Read More

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is the world's fastest convertible

Bugatti may have had its production car world speed record thrown into question, but it didn't take it sitting down. It picked itself up, grabbed one of its newest cars, and went out and set a new record. While it's a step down from the overall record, Bugatti's latest feat crowns its Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse roadster the world's fastest open-topped production car.  Read More

Before Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the dinosaur and Velcro, before Z rated tires, roofs, airbags and the annoyance of windshields came a wondrous piece of automotive pioneering – the 1905 Fiat 60HP. A legendary predecessor to today’s luxo-performance sedans, the Fiat 60HP was the open-aired ride for the industrial elite of the era.  Read More

Wisping air is 12 seconds away

One of the more versatile concepts to come out of last year's Geneva Motor Show was the Magna Steyr MILA Coupic. The concept used a unique retractable fastback-style roof to facilitate a three-for-one: convertible, sporty crossover and pick-up car. For this year's show, Magna Steyr packaged the concept in a more realistic skin, equipping the View Top roof to the Peugeot RCZ.  Read More

The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 60s Special Edition on the floor at the LA Auto Sho...

Gizmag was on hand when Volkswagen unveiled the convertible variant of its new second-generation Beetle at the LA Auto Show ... second generation of the modern front-engined modern version, that is. The first generation was a relatively successful exercise in retro nostalgia, complete with dash-mounted bud vase, that appealed to a distinctly feminine demographic. This time things are more serious and less “cartoony,” with a wider, longer, lower body shape and a level of design and finish that offer real value and less novelty. It’s only right and proper that the iconic rag-top version should be launched in California.  Read More
