MINI's Clubvan Camper, Cowley and Countryman ALL4 Camp concepts

MINI has chosen the height of the British summer to unveil its new motoring-cum-camping concepts aimed at music festival goers and outdoor types in need of what the company euphemistically describes as "overnight solutions." The three products are the Clubvan Camper, the Cowley and the Countryman ALL4 Camp; a tiny camper van, a compact caravan and a rooftop tent respectively. Let's have a look, then.  Read More

The Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Woody-Tailgate Trailer adds a touch of class to any tailgate ...

The Neiman Marcus fantasy gift guide is famous for offering extravagant items for the person who has everything – last year's guide included the Jetlev flyer and a special edition McLaren 12c Spider, for example. Also on the list was an item that at first glace might seem a bit pedestrian in comparison – a caravan. But the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Woody-Tailgate Trailer is luxury all the way, unfolding into a luxury rolling bar complete with a giant ice chest and leather appointments that ensure it will add a touch of class to any tailgate party.  Read More

The Bowlus Road Chief

Caravans make a nice change from holidays in hotels, but they can be as aerodynamic as a shoe box and often about as attractive. Canadian tech entrepreneurs John Long and Helena Mitchell are taking a step forward by going a step backward and reviving the Bowlus Road Chief of the 1930s. It’s an updated version of the classic American design that they call a “revival of an Art Moderne style with 21st century touches.”  Read More

The Romotow, folded up and ready for transport.

If you're like me, you probably find it difficult to get excited about caravans. The Romotow's designers felt the same way, so they've put together a unique design concept – a luxury caravan that folds out like a flick knife (or a USB key) to reveal a deck area that expands the floor space of the unit by some 70 percent. Will it make production? Who knows – but it's certainly a remarkable design. Gizmag spoke to W2 Director and Romotow designer Stuart Winterbourn in Christchurch, New Zealand.  Read More

Odorico Pordenone expandable trailer by Jakub Novak - rear view

Jakub Novak, a Czech student from Brno University of Technology, designed a trailer that would look oddly out of place in a campground. Odorico Pordenone, named after Italian medieval traveler Odoric of Pordenone, offers all the benefits of a luxury camper van, while also allowing you to show off your stunning sports car. Expandable when stationary, the trailer strikes a fine balance between utility and beauty. Although Novak was awarded the Czech National Award for Student Design last year, the project remains only a concept.  Read More

Designed for inland waters only, Sealander comes in the form of a compact and lightweight ...

Designed and built by a German-based industrial designer Daniel Straub, Sealander is a clever two-in-one vehicle that combines features of an electric power boat and a camping trailer. And it's not just a blue-sky concept - a prototype has been built and successfully tested on the road and on the water and Sealander is now reportedly being prepared for production.  Read More

The basket - a tiny take on a kind of pick-up truck crossed with a roadster

Daihatsu's stand at the opening day of the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show featured six mini concept cars focused very much on practicality in an urban environment. Somewhat strangely, the company's concepts stood out because, unlike many other vehicles on the showfloor, none of the cars are electric or electric gasoline hybrid. Daihatsu has instead tried to refine existing technology both in lightweight manufacturing and engine efficiency to improve on fuel economy, but that's not to say the company isn't aiming for a zero-local emissions future - this is only the first step in its road map for powertrains that will culminate in a switch to a fuel cell based system.  Read More

The DC31 handheld vacuum from Dyson - dual speed and more power than before

Looking more like a power tool that just transported from the Starship Enterprise, the latest hand-held vacuum from Dyson has a 10-minute battery life and a digital V2 motor that delivers constant, strong suction - ideal for small cleaning tasks around the home or in a car, boat or caravan. The DC31 has a dual power mode that gives the operator a six-minute burst of power for higher suction at the flick of a switch. Dyson demonstrated its two models, the DC31 and the DC31 Animal to our team at IFA this month, and gave Gizmag's Kate Seamer an exclusive interview.  Read More

The Carcamp

Anyone who has towed a caravan and encountered a ‘snaking’ situation, where the caravan swings from side to side, knows just how scary such an experience can be. There are some ways to lessen the risk of such scenarios, such as not loading heavy items towards the rear of the caravan, but motor home manufacturer Heku has come up with an interesting design called the Carcamp that's designed to enhance stability even at high speeds.  Read More

The world's largest single-story motorhome?

Running the risk of being mistaken for another pavilion at the recent Caravan Salon Motor Home and Caravan Trade Show in Dusseldorf was the Snakeliner President-Suite – a mobile house sitting atop a semitrailer that lets travelers satisfy their wanderlust while enjoying 969 sq ft (90m²) of living space.  Read More
