Mini teases augmented reality eyewear for drivers

If you want to drive with something more personal than a heads-up display, Mini is hoping to bring technology to your car in the form of a pair of connected eyewear. Called Mini Augmented Vision, the smart glasses work a bit like Google Glass or ODG's smartglasses, projecting information in front of you relevant to your drive. Information appears in your field of vision, but in such a way that it doesn’t obstruct your view of the road. BMW showed off a working prototype of the glasses earlier this month at the Shanghai Auto Show.Read More

The first edition S1000RR superbike saved my butt (and my passenger's) in a big way back in 2011, when this spectacular bit of video captured the moment a wide-running pickup ran me off the road and onto the gravel. It's only fair that we give the 2015 version the opportunity to save my butt as well, although perhaps this time with a larger safety margin. So we lined up an S1000RR at Philip Island, one of the world's fastest racetracks, and I went out and rode it as fast as I dared. And as impressive as the performance of this 199-horsepower monster is, even more impressive was the way its ingenious safety and ride assist systems prevented me from making a fool and a bum-up lawn ornament out of myself, time and time again.Read More

BMW has chosen a variant of its X5 SUV to be its first plug-in hybrid production car. Although this might seem a bit of an odd choice, the BMW X5 xDrive40e has lots of trick engineering slickly packaged in a vehicle that could bring plug-in hybrid technology to a wider potential audience than if it was used in a sedan or a sports car.Read More
