Register for Playstation Network in Europe, get Casino Royale on Blu-ray

February 13, 2007 - Even with the delayed launches of the Playstation 3 in PAL territories, Sony is still light on solid launch titles, with Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm being the only exclusives receiving substantial acclaim from reviewers. To shift the focus back to their current strengths, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have announced that the first 500,000 PS3 owners to register with Sony's free online service "PLAYSTATION Network" will receive a copy of the latest James Bond blockbuster "Casino Royale" on Blu-ray. LG Dual-Format Disc Player - Blu-ray and HD DVD playback - due Q1, 2007

January 8, 2007 Blending the latest technologies and offering unprecedented flexibility to consumers seeking the convenience of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD high-definition content, LG showed a groundbreaking "Super Multi Blue" Player at the 2007 International CES overnight. Launching in the United States during the first quarter of 2007, this advanced dual-format high-definition disc player, LG model BH100, will be the first player on the market with the capability to play both next-generation disc formats, addressing the challenge of the current format war. Philips introduces Blu-ray players and media

June 20, 2006 Philips has announced the availability of its first Blu-ray devices, the TripleWriter (SPD7000) all-in-one PC Writer and a home entertainment player (BDP9000). Also announced are two types of recordable media, a 25GB single-layer BD-R (Recordable) and BD-RE (Recordable and Erasable). The Blu-ray discs are available now in North America and Europe, while the Triple Writer and Blu-ray player will be available in both markets later in the year. The new TripleWriter (SPD7000) features recording and playback capabilities of all popular storage formats including CD, DVD and Blu-ray, which allows users to select their media of choice depending on the preferred application. Philips’ TripleWriter features a 2x (72MB/s continuous-data rate) read and writer speed on BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE media. The drive reads and writes a variety of legacy media including: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+RW and DVD-RW. Read More
World's First Blu-Ray Notebook Computer

May 17, 2006 Sony yesterday showed off the first Blu-ray Disc enabled notebook computer - the VAIO AR which will be available next month. The Blu-ray drive will be available on the premium US$3,500 version of the AR, which has a17-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) widescreen display, uses Sony's XBRITE Hi-Color LCD technology and will play full 1080p HD resolution. In addition to supporting HD playback, the VAIO AR notebook is a multimedia powerhouse with the capability to record high-definition camcorder content to Blu-ray Discs. Now aspiring moviemakers can shoot, edit and burn their HD creation on a PC -- all in native 1080 resolution. Using an extensive suite of dedicated software applications, you can also edit high-definition footage and share it on Sony high-capacity BD-R and BD-RE Blu-ray Discs (up to 50 GB) or on traditional DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW capitalizing on flexible storage, playback and recording. World's first automated Blu-ray Disc Publishing System

February 7, 2006 Primera has announced what we believe to be the world's first automated burn and print device to support new high-capacity Blu-ray Disc recorders and media. Along with its reliable (we use the current model in our main office at Gizmag) built-in robotics and full-color direct-to-disc inkjet printing, the US$5995 Bravo XR-Blu incorporates Pioneer's new BDR-101A Blu-ray Disc/DVD Recorder. The initial release of the XR-Blu utilizes single-layer discs to store up to 25 gigabytes of data. An upgrade will be available shortly after launch that will allow dual-layer media, which stores up to 50 gigabytes of data per disc. Since up to 50 discs can be loaded into the XR-Blu at a time, the upgrade will offer a total native capacity of up to 2.5 terabytes of data that can be published in a single session, opening up new applications and solutions that until now were impossible due to storage space constraints. The XR-Blu will be exhibited at CeBIT in Germany from March 9-16, and will begin shipping in April. Read More
Panasonic begins pilot production of 50-GIGABYTE Blu-ray Discs

December 27, 2005 Last week it was the prospect of 5 terabyte drives, but the buzz of the Gizmag Christmas party was the news that Panasonic has modified its existing pilot production line for single-layer Blu-ray Discs, called BD-ROM, so that it is able to replicate dual-layer BD-ROM discs with 50 gigabytes (GB) of storage capacity. The 5 TB drives are still five years away, but the new pilot replication line is happening NOW at the Panasonic Disc Manufacturing Corporation of America, located in Torrance, California and is sure to be one of the talking points of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week (January 5-8, 2006). Single-layer Blu-ray Discs have 25 GB of storage capacity for holding video and other data, while current DVD discs have 8.5 GB of storage at most. Read More
