Earlier this month, the recipients of the 2013 AIA (American Institute of Architects) New York Design Awards were announced. From hundreds of submissions, 42 winning projects were selected for their high quality work. Each submission scored merit for its use of innovative ideas, design quality, response to community needs and technique. Last night's Academy Awards marked a number of achievements in film history, but there was one noteworthy accomplishment that wasn't mentioned on stage. The Economist magazine announced the winners of its 2012 Innovation Awards on Thursday evening. Selected from fields as diverse as bioscience, telecommunications, energy and aerospace, the winners were selected by a panel of judges, comprised largely of previous award winners. As diverse as they were, those awarded did share one particular trait: far from being pie-in-the-sky ideas, their innovations were all proven technologies. The winners of the 18th international BraunPrize were announced on Wednesday in Frankfurt, Germany and Gizmag was lucky enough to meet the young contenders and play a part in the final judging process. The prestigious industrial design awards attracted a total of 2,399 entries from 73 different nations, with six finalists making it to the final round. The award sought outstanding design ideas for better everyday living, and judging merit was given to submissions that demonstrated the use of innovative design, new technology and sustainability.  Read More

Lista Office has been awarded a prestigious Red Dot design award for its Mindport interior furnishing system. Designed to counteract the tedium and tyranny of the typical open-plan office cubicle system these colorful "pods" come in a range of designs for different office functions - providing an antidote to the massed ranks of identical work-stations. Each year, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), a non-profit group based at the Illinois Institute of Technology, selects structures from around the world which represent a blend of sustainability, technical innovation and appealing design. This year's winners, each impressive in its own right, hail from Australia, Canada, Italy and Qatar along with one from Abu Dhabi that took the organization's first-ever Innovation Award. An international panel of jurors made the picks which will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony in Chicago this October.  Read More
