The Crossfade M-100 headphones from V-MODA

Val Kolton's V-MODA announced a new addition to its stylish range of headphones in October 2012 which, by the time of actual release in mid-December, had managed to attract a good many positive comments from the critics and enthusiasts fortunate enough to get an early listen. The Crossfade M-100s were developed in collaboration with over 200 audiophiles, editors, artists, DJs and Grammy-winning musicians ... and it shows. Gizmag has spent the last few weeks with our ears snuggled up to the 50 mm drivers to find out what all the fuss is about.  Read More

The Parasound CD1 spins CDs four times faster than normal to eliminate errors

Audio files may seem to have put paid to CDs, but new technology shows that, like vinyl, the format still has a few tricks left in it. CDs do a pretty good job of reproducing music, but for many an audiophile the digital format lacks “warmth” and often suffers from tiny, yet detectable, imperfections that can be as jarring as serving Gordon Ramsay ketchup with lobster. The Parasound CD 1 player strives to eliminate these imperfections by ditching the conventional CD player in favor of a CD-ROM drive that spins CDs at four times normal speed in order to find and eliminate imperfections before they reach the speakers.  Read More

The VAMP VERZA and the METALLO case

One of the most lamented parts of smartphones for audiophiles is the sound quality. To an undiscerning ear, the sound is fine, but for users who want to hear every last detail of the music, smartphones just can't hack it. V-MODA has already thrown its name into the smartphone sound enhancing battle with its VAMP case for iPhone 4/4S. Now it's back with a new option for iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy SIII, and Samsung Galaxy Note II users called the VAMP VERZA, and its companion case the Metallo.  Read More

Gizmag reviews Phiaton's MODERNA MS 200 in-ear earphones

The Phiaton Corporation (a subsidiary of Korean audio veterans Cresyn) has added a new member to its purist-pleasing MODERNA Series headphones. The bold red and black design of the MS 200 half-in-ear earphones is certainly an attention-grabber and the carbon fiber panels are sure to provide conversation fodder, but how do these undeniably stylish phones actually perform? Gizmag has spent the last few weeks exploring that very question ... and we're suitably impressed.  Read More

High-end audio specialist McIntosh has launched the McAire personal music system featuring...

The name McIntosh Labs has been synonymous with outstanding audio quality for more than 60 years and its iconic MC275 tube amp certainly left its mark on me when I first encountered one many moons ago. Hot on the heels of the MX121 audio/video control center featuring Apple's AirPlay wireless technology released earlier this year, the company has launched the McAire free-standing personal music system that allows a new generation of discriminating consumers to stream audio from an iTunes library on a Mac or PC - or music from an iDevice - over an existing home network.  Read More

Holger Fritzlar, Sonic Chair designer with guest musician

The Sonic Chair isn't a new concept, it's been offering the public auditory pleasure in museums and libraries world wide since 2007. At this year's IFA the new improved SC02 was unveiled featuring iPad integration and an enhanced amplifier system. The good news, it's finally available to Joe and Jane Public for a mere 8,999 euros. That's without the fancy extras. Gizmag talked exclusively to one of its designers.  Read More

The options for those looking to improve the oft-maligned audio quality of their iOS device have pretty much been limited to getting a better set of headphones or improving the quality of the audio files themselves. V-MODA has already come to the party with its Crossfade LP headphones and now provides another option for audiophiles with VAMP, a case for iPhone 4/4S with an integrated amp, DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and battery pack.  Read More

The Colorfly Pocket Hi-Fi C4 pro is the first portable player capable of handling 24-bit/1...

The modern smartphone has quickly become an essential part of modern living. It's a powerful portable computer, a high resolution camera, and a mobile communications center. However, if you're of the school who thinks that just because such a device can also play music, there's no need to spend good money on a separate audio player - the Colorfly Pocket Hi-Fi C4 pro may well be the dedicated music player to change your mind. Hidden within a gorgeous walnut outer shell with hand-carved motif and controlled by deliciously old-school physical buttons and sliding volume pot, the black circuit board heart of this music player is home to some top notch tech with one purpose - to deliver audiophile-pleasing, Hi-Fi-quality audio.  Read More

Two Woo Audio WA-234 MONO mono-block headphone/speaker amplifiers

Actually it's two US$5,000 amps because these rather spectacular looking beasts are mono-blocks. They are two completely separate, but matched, mono amplifiers. Now it's no secret that the world of audiophile hi-fi sound systems can be a place of strange voodoo and esoterica - where the Law of Diminishing Returns becomes a way of life for deluded males of a certain age (never women it seems) but let's check our cynicism at the door for the moment. There is something interesting going on here and it may just turn out that at $10,000 for the pair, these amps are a (relative) bargain.  Read More
