Apple has announced that iOS 4.2 is now available as a free download for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. While iPhone and iPod touch users have enjoyed many of the features found in the latest version in iOS 4.0 and 4.1, it brings multitasking, fast app switching, folders, Game Center and a unified mail inbox to the iPad for the first time. Here's a clever set of headphones from Japanese manufacturer Elecom that are specifically built to hold the latest iPod Shuffle. The company has created a very simple neckstrap/headphone unit that slips over your ears, and then your iPod shuffle docks right into the ear-piece. It might seem a long time, but the Media Tablet marketplace did not exist until April this year. It soon became obvious that Apple's iPad had catalyzed yet another major computing trend – by Computex, almost every device manufacturer in the world had a tablet coming. Last month, Gartner Group predicted the 20 million sales expected in 2010 will grow an order of magnitude over the next four years. Now Gartner has gone a step further. “It is not usually the role of the CEO to get directly involved in specific technology device decisions, but Apple's iPad is an exception,” says the report. “It is more than just the latest consumer gadget; and CEOs and business leaders should initiate a dialogue with their CIOs about it if they have not already done so.” Read More

The new MacBook Air has arrived – and it has a smaller sibling. Apple's update to its ultra-portable notebook range includes the addition of an 11-inch model alongside the 13-inch, with both flavors coming in at a slender 0.11-0.68 inches (0.3-1.7 cm) in height and weighing 2.3 and 2.9 pounds respectively. The top spec 13-inch has a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 256GB of flash storage, 7 hour battery life, 1440 by 900 resolution screen and, in a welcome nod to practicality, both models now feature two USB ports. This July, following the torrent of bad press surrounding the iPhone 4’s antenna issues, Apple implemented its Case Program, which provided a free Apple Bumper, (including a refund if one had already been purchased), or a choice of case from a number of third-party suppliers. The company also applied a no restocking fee return policy for dissatisfied customers. Apple has now announced that after September 30, it will continue to offer only the Bumper case for free through AppleCare and the no restocking fee policy will end. Read More

Apple has caused a lot of confusion for iPhone app developers by banning them from creating apps using any compiler not created by Apple, but then approving apps that break this rule – even going so far as to promote them in the App Store. Finally it looks like Apple has seen the light (and presumably the benefits) and announced that it has relaxed restrictions on its iOS developer license, opening the doors to native Flash and AdMob applications – as long as the resulting apps do not download any code.
