Only a couple of months after Samsung debuted its Galaxy Tab at IFA 2010 rumors were circulating that an AMOLED version may have been in the works. One year on from the official launch of the tablet, Samsung has unveiled just such a device at IFA 2011 in the form of the Galaxy Tab 7.7. As the name suggests, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 sports a 7.7-inch display (that’s 0.7-inches bigger than the original Galaxy Tab) and is the first tablet to feature a Super AMOLED Plus display, which boasts 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and promises brighter, higher-contrast viewing. Nokia has officially taken the wraps off its new X7 smartphone – an entertainment and mobile gaming focused unit that packs a 4-inch, 16:9, AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 8 megapixel camera and 720p video capture into nicely chiseled stainless steel casing that's less than half an inch (11.9 mm) thick. Along with the (also freshly announced) QWERTY keyboard equipped E6, the X7 is the first Nokia device to run on the updated Symbian "Anna" platform which introduces a raft of enhancements including new icons, improved text input, faster browsing and a spruced-up version of Ovi Maps. Google has announced that its Nexus S Android smartphone will shortly be available on Sprint's WiMAX/4G network. The curvaceous device benefits from a Super AMOLED display that's said to offer an HD-like multimedia experience, Samsung's application processor, a couple of cameras and a decent helping of onboard memory. The Sprint deal comes with the added sweetener of Google Voice support, which holds the promise of using one number for numerous phones. Read More

There’s bound to be all manner of display technologies vying for eyeballs at CES 2011 when it kicks off in Las Vegas next week and two prototype AMOLED displays from Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) will definitely be high on our list of things to check out. The first is a 4.5-inch 800 x 480 (WVGA) resolution flexible AMOLED display concept prototype for mobile devices, while the second is the world’s largest transparent AMOLED display prototype for use in PC monitors and TVs. The theory that the Galaxy Tab could become the first genuine challenger to Apple's iPad in the media tablet marketplace is about to be put to the test with Samsung's 7-inch offering going on sale in the U.S. this week. At the same time the possibility of a Super AMOLED screen on the next-gen Galaxy Tab has also surfaced with Samsung Mobile Display showing a 7-inch AMOLED screen at the International Flat Panel Display forum in Japan. Not content with offering smartphone users just a single touchscreen, Samsung's new Android-based Continuum model sports two AMOLED displays. Sitting underneath the main screen is a ticker display that is used to feed the user news and information without interfering with what's being displayed above. Other features include a 5 megapixel camera, the ability to act as a hotspot for other wireless devices, and a six-axis sensor that works with the accelerometer to offer fluid pan and tilt gaming. The paper-thin, flexible AMOLED display developed by Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has taken gold in the Wall Street Journal's Technology Innovation Award. Catering for two-sided surface visibility, FlexUPD could see its way into rollable mobile phones or e-Readers, or incorporated into clothing to provide information about the wearer – for medical purposes, for instance. The Samsung Epic 4G smartphone is on its way to Sprint networks in coming months... and it really looks the goods. Known on the rumor mill as the "Galaxy S Pro" before today's official announcement, the Epic 4G packs dual cameras with LED flash and (720p) video recording, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a six-axis motion sensor. Running on Android 2.1, the handset also features WiFi 802.11 b/g/n with hotspot capability for up to five devices and access to 4G data networks (WiMAX) which Sprint says can deliver peak download of more than 10 Mbps.
