Midland Radio has announced two new HD actioncam models in its XTC wearable video camera line. The XTC200 and XTC300 HD actioncams join the XTC100 standard def model announced in January. The XTCs have a similar form factor as the VholdR Contour HD or Drift Innovations HD170, with a small rugged chassis that can be mounted on a helmet, goggle strap, handlebars, or wherever you want to capture your extreme action.  Read More

If you’ve been lusting after GoPro’s HD HERO actioncam, but can’t justify the US$300 price tag, then you’ll be glad to hear this: GoPro has just released a more basic version, that costs $180. As its name implies, the HD HERO 960 is limited to a maximum resolution of 960p, as opposed to the HD HERO’s 1080. I’ve always been fascinated by actioncams... or helmetcams, or POVcams, or whatever else you want to call them. Even before they were available to us mere consumers, I used to wonder, What would it look like if you could see what a camera saw, if it were mounted on that model airplane/squirrel’s back/cereal spoon/football, etc? Thus it was that when Drift Innovation released its high-def HD-170 this July, with its swiveling fisheye lens and viewing screen, I wanted to try one out. So I’d have something to compare it against, I also got hold of a GoPro HERO HD – probably the most popular actioncam currently available. It seems like just yesterday Oregon Scientific was offering up its ATC2K actioncam, and now it’s all the way up to the 9K? They grow up so fast! Like its immediate predecessor, the ATC5K, the ATC9K features a built-in color LCD screen. Unlike it, however, the 9K shoots full 1080p HD, is waterproof down to 20 meters/60 feet (the 5K only goes down to 3 meters/10 feet), has a 130-degree field of view, includes a remote, and it can embed G-force data on your footage.  Read More

In the past few years, several companies have started selling tiny, rugged, inexpensive “action” video cameras designed to be mounted on wild-n-crazy vantage points such as mountain bike helmets, hang-gliders or even model rockets (yes, it’s been done). Up until recently, however, a common complaint about these cameras was that their lenses weren’t wide enough to capture all the action. That problem was squarely addressed with the autumn 2008 release of a new camera, the GoPro HERO Wide.
