The counterpoint is obvious – the most fleeting of "lampshades" married to that most long-living of light sources: the LED. The Surface Tension Lamp by FRONT continuously blows soap bubbles which, as they inflate and eventually burst, creates a dynamic lit environment.

According to FRONT's math, its Surface Tension Lamp will create approximately 3 million different lampshades over the course of the tens of thousands of hours of the LED's working life.

"A bubble is brief, and bursts at your touch," says FRONT's description of the project. "But while it lasts, it catches the light and reflects the room like a multi-colored temporary structure."

For a better sense of the lamp in action, see the video below.

cool!
only downside I can see is sticky soapy gloop getting all over everything...
also doesn't seem to put out much light for a lamp

How often do you have to refill it with bubble solution?

This would probably work better in an enclosed jar, a bit like an oversized lava-lamp. That could mean that the soapy liquid gets recycled many times, and doesn't cause a mess.

Who wants soapy gunk all over their furniture/house? I sure don't.
