Sunreef Yachts’ first luxury catamaran in its new Carbon Line hit the open water for the first time last month and is undergoing sea trials before making its way to the Cannes Boat Show 2013 in mid-September for its world premiere. To reach its lightship weight (the weight of the completed vessel, minus any provisions, supplies or cargo) of 45 tonnes (49 tons), the 80 Levante is made from an advanced composite sandwich that combines vinylester, PVC foam and carbon/glass fiber.

Other weight-reducing features of the 80 ft (24.38 m) long vessel that is 11.6 m (38 ft) at its widest point (beam) include a carbon mast and boom, Kevlar standing rigging and a 280 sq m (3,014 sq ft) gennaker sail made from Cuben Fiber. The main sail and genoa sail are made of Vectran.

Sunreef lists the yacht’s total sail area at 340 sq m (3,660 sq ft), which in combination with a design intended to reduce windage and water resistance, should propel up to nine guests and four crew over the water at speeds of over 20 knots (37 km/h, 23 mph). Two 270 hp Yanmar diesel engines and two main 780 L (206.5 US gal) fuel tanks are also on board for wind-free propulsion.

The portside hull contains a guest cabin with bathroom, galley and four crew cabins, while the starboard hull houses another guest cabin and a children’s cabin, both with en suites. In a departure for a Sunreef single deck catamaran, the master suite with direct access to a dressing room and bathroom is located on the main deck, along with the navigation station, dining area and lounge zone. But as per usual for Sunreef’s catamaran’s, there are dining areas, sunbathing pads and storage areas adjoining the cockpit and flybridge.

A second Sunreef 80 Carbon Line is currently under construction and is due to be completed within eight months. Pricing varies depending on fit out, but Sunreef quotes a price of around €5.5 million (approx. US$7.3 million) for a fully custom catamaran.
