Games have come a long way since the days of Pong and its knob controller. These days, some computer users aren't content even with a 101 key keyboard and mouse combo. This has led to input devices that attempt to bring feet into the mix, such as the SoftStep KeyWorx and Thanko USB Foot Switch. The latest foot-centric input device to catch our eye comes from Canada-based Stelulu Technology, whose Stinky Footboard is aimed at gamers for whom two hands just aren't enough.
With a name that is presumably a nod to the odor associated with the appendages at our lower extremities, the Stinky Footboard boasts a design and build that should appeal to its target market of hardcore gamers. With an aluminum top plate that is big enough for all but the largest of feet and a steel inner frame encased within a hardy plastic shell, the device looks built to stand up to extended gaming sessions.
Despite its size, the Stinky Footboard has been kept simple, packing just four Cherry MX switches – corresponding to forward, back, left and right foot presses. The switches are completely customizable and allow up to 16 unique commands when used in combination with Control, Alt and Shift keys. We’re not sure if it would be possible to double up and get one for each foot to extend the number of commands at your disposal.
The feel of the board can be customized with the resistance of each switch able to be adjusted by taking to the underside of the device with an Allen. This is designed to ensure different users, whether they be lead or light foots, are able to achieve a comfortable resting position. Replaceable springs that return the top plate to a neutral position after a button press also come in soft, medium and hard varieties.
And while it's targeted at gamers, there are plenty of other computer users who might appreciate the Stinky Footboard, such as video and image editors and computer modelers, just to name a few.
The Stinky Footboard connects via USB to a PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 and is slated for a June release at a price of US$119. Stelulu Technology will also be launching a Kickstarter campaign to help with getting the device into production.
