"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being."

Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs has passed away aged 56. This sad news comes just a little over a month after Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple, the company he co-founded in 1976. Apple's new CEO Tim Cook summed up the loss in an email to the company's employees today: "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being."

The following is the official statement from Apple's Board of Directors:

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations thatenrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

As well as co-founding Apple with Steve Wozniak and overseeing the company's incredible renaissance in recent years, Jobs' remarkable business achievements included the co-founding of Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs also served on the board of The Walt Disney Company after Disney and Pixar merged in 2006.

Apple has called for those of us (and there will be many) who would would like to share thoughts, memories and condolences to send an email to rememberingsteve@apple.com.

R.I.P. Mr. Jobs, you will be missed.

Visionaries like Steve Jobs reveal the true secret to the Universe in that nothing is impossible with time, perseverance, and positive visualization. Such a passion for furthering human communication inspires. His legacy will survive generations with names like Edison, Tesla as the greatest inventors and visionaries of all time. As an artist, I draw from these inspirations and advancements in my work.

Apple was fortunate to have Steve Jobs return to lead the company, after its board imprudently put first Sculley and then Amelio at the helm, but Steve Jobs was also very fortunate to have an Apple to make his visions into real world products. Most visionaries get shot down, even as Jobs was forced out of Apple by Sculley, and the odds of someone marching to a different drummer and succeeding even in Silicon Valley has become increasingly difficult with the current crop of corporate managers and the pedestrian composition of the boards of directors of their companies.

Steve Jobs was a visionary and all true leaders are visionaries. There are few enough of them on the planet. He will be missed. He left behind a wonderful legacy and hopefully some of his genius rubbed off on the many people he worked with through the years. See you on the other side Steve.
