A recent prototype of the On Running Shoe - the final design will be unveiled in February,...

It may be a great form of exercise, but running is a high impact pursuit that places great strain on muscles and tendons. The stress it places on the body forces many runners to hang up their shoes and seek alternative, lower impact forms of exercise. Looking to take the pain out of running, a Swiss engineer set about creating a shoe that enabled the runner to land as soft as if running on sand, and to push off as if running in track shoes. The result is the the On Running Shoe – a shoe that incorporates a unique rubber ring into the sole design to provide a soft landing, while offering firmness and stability on push off.  Read More

Sony has announced a deal with FIFA to shoot selected matches from next year's World Cup i...

At Sony's press conference during IFA 2009, four members of the Gizmag team were among those treated to a demonstration of the company's latest 3D technology. While animated features are one thing, we all agreed that the snippets of football footage shown in 3D looked amazing. It's a whole order of magnitude above 2D - no matter how big or fast your flatscreen - when it comes to feeling like you are actually watching the action live. We walked away convinced that sports broadcasting will be the real turning point for the technology and it's certain to play a key role as major players try to convince people to start buying 3D TVs from next year. Sony understands this and has just announced a deal with FIFA to shoot selected matches from the 2010 World Cup in 3D. Being the world's most popular sporting event, this has to be the perfect platform with which to usher in the new technology.  Read More

The Snowtunnel - an indoor snowboarding experience.

The trouble with seasonal sports is that you've literally got to follow the seasons around the globe if you want to live your passion year-round. That, or let technology find a way to bring you your outdoor thrills indoors - like the Snowtunnel does. We've seen Dubai's lavish indoor ski slopes in the middle of the desert - now, this Aussie invention gives snowboarders the chance to cut a neverending icy edge for a fraction of the cost it takes to operate other indoor ski facilities. Sure, it'd be nothing like the feeling of dropping in, carving and jumping your way down a mountain slope, but the Snowtunnel looks like its own kind of fun.  Read More

The AlterG M300 treadmill allows the user to train whilst sustaining an injury

There are two things that are immediately appealing about the AlterG M300 treadmill. The first is being able to maintain fitness levels whilst nursing an injury, and the second is that you’ll feel as light as a feather whilst working out. The M300 allows people to run or walk at a reduced body weight of up to 80 percent, while the differential air pressure technology assists by applying a comfortable lifting force to the body. By reducing the body weight, there is less impact on the muscles and joints, and people are able to move more naturally and without pain.  Read More

The bamboo frame is strong, good looking and may even give a smoother ride

Undoubtedly a pretty environment-friendly way to travel, donning a pair of skates still leaves you with a bit of an eco-headache. With all that plastic and metal wrapped around your ankles, the skates themselves are a bit of an environmental let down - until now. Inline skate innovators at K2 skates have recently added another industry first to the company's catalogue of cutting edge developments. Not only are the boots and laces made from recycled plastic bottles but the wheel frame is made from one of the most sustainable materials on the planet, bamboo.  Read More

They’re enough to fulfill anyone’s dreams of bionic powers: jump six feet in the air (and over cars, if you’re in the mood), run at 25 miles an hour or more, and stride nine feet at a time. The Pool-Mate calculates the number of laps, average strokes per lap, speed, distance, cal...

For swimmers and triathletes in training or racing, keeping a tab on laps is tedious, but also it can be easy to lose track at times, especially as you tire. Plus there are frankly better things to think about while you’re working out in the pool. British company Swimovate has come up with a swimming computer, worn like a wristwatch, which takes the mental work out of keeping a lap count. But being a smart bit of tech, the Pool-Mate does a heap more besides.  Read More
