During CES 2009 SanDisk Corporation unveiled its next-generation of flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSD) to support the netbook market - SanDisk pSSD. The new SanDisk pSSD-P2 and SanDisk pSSD-S2 SSDs have the same interface and functionality of traditional SSDs, but without the bulky packaging that's used to emulate 1.8" and 2.5" magnetic drives.

Available in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64-gigabytes, SanDisk claims that these Gen 2 pSSD drives will be aggressively priced: “Netbooks represent the fastest growing PC segment in 2009 and 2010 yet widespread adoption of SSDs in netbooks has been limited by speed, capacity and cost constraints,” said Rich Heye, senior vice president and general manager, Solid-State Drives (SSD), SanDisk. “With the significant improvements in performance, capacity and low pricing, these SSDs are a perfect fit for the exploding netbook market.”

The company had a lot more to say about the size of the netbook market (their intended sweet spot for these products) and how affordable that the devices are, but we just think that it's cool that SSDs are finally shucking the unneeded packaging.
