Instructables is a website dedicated to supplying information from members on how to complete a vast array of DIY projects. One of the more unusual, but potentially useful, ideas is to hide your fancy new car stereo with a crappier one in order to ward off would-be thieves.

The "Fake-out Stolen Stereo" concept is quite simple: take the faceplate of an old car stereo and fit it over your new stereo. The idea is to make it easily removable so you only place it over the new stereo when you leave the car. There are a number of users on Instructables offering various ways to complete this task. Some even go as far as attaching a cassette tape to the old faceplate for added realism.

This novel approach seems plausible if you have an older car with a newer stereo, however it may be a little harder to fool a career criminal if your new BMW 7 Series has the stereo faceplate of a 1988 Buick LeSabre. For detailed instructions on how to create your custom made anti-theft device for your car stereo, see the range of different options on the Instructables website.
