With the release of its K900 smartphone in China, Lenovo confirms its determination to face high-end smartphone manufacturers head on. Despite being only 6.9 mm thin, this Jelly Bean beauty boasts the latest Atom processor from Intel, a 5.5-inch Full HD display and a 13-megapixel camera that lies flush with the stainless steel alloy and polycarbonate unibody housing.
Part of Lenovo's PC+ strategy, which sees the company moving beyond computer manufacture into other aspects of our digital life, the flagship K900 is reported to the be the first smartphone to incorporate Intel's latest 2 GHz dual-core Atom Z2580 processor. The smartphone's brain is supported by 2 GB of system memory and either 16 or 32 GB of solid state storage. It gets a multi-tasking/performance efficiency boost from Hyper-Threading technology, and triple the graphics performance of previous generation devices thanks to a Graphics Media Accelerator engine running a PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU.
The 157 x 78 x 6.9 mm (6.1 x 3 x 0.27 inch), 162 g (5.7 oz) K900 has a 5.5-inch IPS Corning Gorilla Glass 2 display at full 1080p resolution and a density of 400+ pixels per inch. It runs Android 4.2, packs in 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0, and benefits from a fast charging feature that juices up the 2500 mAh battery in just 90 minutes.
To the front is a 2-megapixel camera with an 88-degree viewing angle. Round the back you'll find a 13-megapixel camera that makes use of a Sony Exmor BSI sensor stack and wide aperture F1.8 lens. It's capable of up to 10 frames per second continuous shooting, and has a feature set that includes a mode which captures five images in quick succession and allows the user to remove anyone or anything that might have moved in front of the subject while the shot was taken. This camera is also capable of recording Full HD video at 30 frames per second.
The Lenovo K900 is on sale now in China for suggested retail price of ¥3,299 (about US$540), ahead of a more widespread rollout across international markets in the coming months. There's no official word on a US release date.
