Samsung’s Sports Miniket for xtreme sports capture

Samsung’s Sports Miniket for xtreme sports capture

August 31, 2005 We like ruggedised electronics, and we like this one in particular as it’ll help the world to participate more fully in X-sports adventure. Samsung's new ruggedised Sports Miniket VP-X110L is a new variant in the range combining a camcorder, digital camera and MP3 player. Most importantly, the Sports Miniket has been developed with an external camera and a set of mountings, specifically so it would be ideal for recording all manner of outdoor activities from adrenaline-charged action sports through, well … almost anything. The Sports Miniket’s external camera module can be mounted on a helmet, on an arm via the arm-band or any stable surface. If there’s a drawback, it’s that the digital still image camera is a hopelessly inadequate 800 x 600 pixels – incredibly lame from a company that produces 7 mpx camera phones. (read more...)

Hasselblad 22megapixel fully digital H2D, compatible with existing lenses

Hasselblad 22megapixel fully digital H2D, compatible with existing lenses

August 30, 2005 Hasselblad’s large format cameras have been synonymous with the highest calibre of professional photography for many decades in the silver halide world of photography, but has set a firm course towards excellence in the digital world. A year after the launch of the Hasselblad H1, the Swedish company is building on the success of the H1 with the newly developed H2 cross platform camera and the H2D fully-integrated digital camera. Both the cameras include a series of brand new features, and are fully compatible with Hasselblad’s existing H system lenses. New products in the Ixpress digital back line include the Ixpress CF and Ixpress CFH, bringing new levels of flexibility to specialist professional photographers. Protective silicone skin for your digital camera

Protective silicone skin for your digital camera

August 26, 2005 We’re not sure what the current product lifecycle is for digital cameras but our guess is that a lot of people must have had the same idea about waterproofing digital cameras about 18 months to two years ago because we keep seeing new ideas around the basic concept. Pentax announced today the limited availability of a protective, silicone Skin for the OptioWP digital camera which looks good, costs just US$20 and deserves to be available for all digital cameras. Custom-made to protect the popular waterproof camera, the PENTAX OptioWP Skin helps prevent surface scratches and dents, offers a non-slip surface and retains the compact, elegant shape of the camera. The translucent, non-toxic, versatile Skin material will stretch and give to fit snugly around the camera and offer an anti-static finish to further repel moisture and dust. We’ve recently written about the Ricoh Caplio 400G ruggedised camera, underwater cases for most common cameras and the WaveCase, a shockproof and waterproof casing that fits 95% of all cell phones enabling them to be used underwater, turning the average camera-phone into an underwater camera. Professional quality photography moves into compact cameras

Professional quality photography moves into compact cameras

August 20, 2005 There is no question that the capabilities of the upper end Pro-sumer digital camera market is filtering down to the compact camera range and no more compelling evidence of this could be found than Panasonic’s new LX1 – the first of the new LUMIX 16:9 wide LX series – look at the specs: 8.4-Megapixel, 4x optical zoom (equivalent to 28 mm to 112 mm on a 35mm film camera) with full manual controls, all on a compact camera. The LX1 incorporates an 8.4-Megapixel CCD and a high resolution 2.5-inch LCD creen in its undersized body. Liquid lens mimics the human eye

Liquid lens mimics the human eye

August 19, 2005 Taking a leaf from Mother Nature, scientists at A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) in Singapore have developed tiny lenses made of liquid, which mimics the action of the human eye. The liquid lens system has optical zooming abilities and uses only a fraction of the space of most conventional lenses. It alters its focal length by changing its shape. The lens promises optical zoom functionality for the next generation of camera phones and other compact hand-held devices. We have reported previously on similar functionality shown by Philips at CEBIT 2004. (read more...)

PC-Controlled Desktop Digital Photography Studio

PC-Controlled Desktop Digital Photography Studio

August 5, 2005 Taking professional-quality photographic images usually requires a professional photographer. In some controlled situations though, where the variables are limited and the throughput is high, there’s a need for a professional “studio-in-a-box” such as the Photosimile tabletop digital photography studio. The Photosimile comes in two sizes (100 and 200) and can be used by anyone to create professional, colour-accurate and shadow-free photographs that are perfect for websites, product catalogs, online auctions, quality control, enhanced business communication and Ebay vendors. Photosimile works with any digital camera as a photography light box, however when used with a compatible digital camera, Photosimile becomes a powerful PC-controlled photography studio using software that simplifies and automates image capture and processing. Compatible digital cameras include: the Canon PowerShot A and G series and the Olympus C series. (read more...)

Face Robot facial animation technology pioneers new approach to believable, emotional digital acting

August 3, 2005 The world’s most important computer graphics showcase SIGGRAPH 2005 opened yesterday with a rash of new important announcements and techniques to be seen on the floor of the Los Angeles Convention Center, though none are likely to have the far reaching ramifications of SoftImage Face Robot, a revolutionary new facial animation technology. Face Robot software is the first technology that allows 3-D artists to achieve realistic, lifelike facial animation for high-end film, post and games projects. The technology is built on a new computer model of facial soft tissue that mimics the full range of emotions portrayed by the human face. SIGGRAPH attendees made a bee-line to the Avid Computer Graphics booth to experience the Face Robot system. The technology offers artists a very intuitive way to interact with CG characters while providing precise control over facial details, including wrinkles, frowns, flaring nostrils and bulging neck muscles. World’s slimmest, lightest and most compact digital movie camera?

July 4, 2005 The slimmest, lightest and most compact digital movie camera in the world - that’s what Sanyo is claiming for its new ultra-compact VPC-C5 and it may well be true. Regardless it is very small and doubles as pocket-sized 5-megapixel digital camera and full-motion MPEG-4 video camera at the same time as offering built-in digital image stabilization which makes it state-of-the-art in that area and it can take digital still images while simultaneously shooting video. Though the RRP is US$699, street prices are already down to less than US$550. Users can also select real-time interpolation up to 10 megapixels which allows photos to be enlarged to "bigger than life" proportions without sacrificing image fidelity, (read more...)

Olympus gets serious underwater

Olympus gets serious underwater

July 2, 2005 Maybe we’ve been leading a sheltered life but when the new PT-E01 underwater case crossed the Gizmag editorial desk, we were mightily impressed. Here was a device that enabled you to take an 8 megapixel Olympus E-300 digital SLR camera safely underwater, with a range of lens ports to enable different lenses to be used, plus an entire flash set-up. Then we started looking at the market and found that although the PT-E01 underwater case system and its parts are genuine Olympus accessories, that’s about all that’s unique – the growth of the digital photography marketplace over the last few years has seen underwater casings developed for all the major digital SLR cameras on the market and underwater cases are now available for most popular pocket digital cameras and even camera phones too. The pricing at the SLR end of the digital camera range isn’t for struggling amateurs, but complete technical control can be had, even if you’re 60 metres underwater. (read more...)

More Electronic paper products - this time a clock

More Electronic paper products - this time a clock

June 16, 2005 Citizen Watch and E Ink this week demonstrated a curved clock utilising an electronic paper display(EPD), further indicating that E Ink’s electronic paper is getting ever closer to the mass market. The Citizen clock follows closely on Seiko’s showing of the world's first watch with an electronic paper display at the Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Show in April. Both designs incorporate an ultra-thin, low-power display integrated into a curved face but the most compelling aspect of electronic paper displays is their legibility – the reason electronic paper has been developed is ease-of-use compared to traditional electronic displays and computer screens and hence the primary aim has been the development of ebooks which are friendlier on the eye than a computer screen’s 72 to 90 dots per inch. Kodak Easyshare V550 and V530 fuse digital camera and camcorder

Kodak Easyshare V550 and V530 fuse digital camera and camcorder

June 10 , 2005 It’s no secret that the functionality of the digital camera and the camcorder are converging, so Kodak’s new Easyshare V550 and V530 zoom digital cameras should be no surprise – but they are, because they break new ground in blending video and still photography. For the first time, videos can be automatically turned into stop-action still pictures with the necessary 5-megapixel resolution for a sizeable photographic print while the still camera can also capture 80 minutes of TV-quality video with sound. Bringing image stabilisation with it to avoid on-screen shaking with built-in image stabilization technology, the new cameras (which look for all the world like a Canon IXUS), have a 3X optical zoom lens and a 2.5-inch, very high-resolution LCD screen (230,000 pixels) LCD screen, viewable from nearly any angle. Samsung rocks the digital camera market

Samsung rocks the digital camera market

June 4, 2005 Korean company Samsung certainly is making a name for itself by announcing category busting numbers in almost every marketplace it tackles and the digital camera market appears set for the same treatment. Last week in China at the 8th Annual China International Photo and Electronic Imaging, Machinery and Technology Fair in Beijing Samsung showed the Pro815 Digimax and in all the key numbers the camera stacks up better than all the currently announced competition. It has a massive 3.5 inch LCD screen on the back, takes an eight megapixel image, has “the world's largest-capacity 1900mAh, 7.4V lithium-ion battery” and most significantly of all, it has an optical 15 times zoom. In 35mm terms, that’s a 28mm to 429mm zoom lens which is the biggest so far offered on a digital camera and one which offers wide angle through significant telephoto. Speculation suggests that as the lens is manufactured by Schneider-KREUZNACH, it’ll soon be available on other cameras (read more...)

Product Review: Panasonic Lumix FZ5

Product Review: Panasonic Lumix FZ5

April 18, 2005 The digital camera market continues to grow at an astonishing rate and the major competitors continuing to shoehorn new features into new cameras at an ever more affordable price – one example of just how far we have come in such a short period of time is the Panasonic FZ5, a camera we recently spent some time with. The 5.0-megapixel FZ5 LUMIX has a 12 times zoom lens – that’s equivalent to a zoom lens on a traditional camera having a ranbge from 36mm to 432mm. As it is TINY, and weighs 320 games with battery and memory card included, Panasonic has also included an Optical Image Stabilizer to compensate for handshake. The result is a camera that’s more than good enough for professional quality imagery – at a street price under US$450. (read more...)
