The world’s most advanced LCD TV - 56-inch and 3840 x 2160 pixels

The world’s most advanced LCD TV - 56-inch and 3840 x 2160 pixels

February 24, 2006 Taiwanese Chi Mei Optoelectronics is a name you may not know, despite the company being the third largest LCD TV panel supplier in the world. At CEBIT in Hannover in mid-March, the company will display the world’s first 56-inch LCD TV panel. Perhaps more startling than the size of the mega-telly is the definition which is known as Quad Full High Definition (QFHD) with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and an astonishing 8.29 million pixels. The new panel features resolution that is four times that of currently available products (1920 x 1080), and the highest ever achieved. The new panel consists of over 24.8 million units of transistors, with a data transmission speed of over 1.4 gigabytes per second. To achieve this breakthrough result, the Chi Mei Optoelectronics research and development team overcame a number of significant technical challenges, including the development of special new driver methods and scanning procedures and solving massive heat generation problems caused by the alignment of so many transistors. The matchbox-sized PVPro projector

The matchbox-sized PVPro projector

February 17, 2006 Miniaturised projection is one of those technologies that has been promised for so long that it has developed the permanent stench of vapourware. Now we’re confident we can say it’s time is nearing, with both DigiSlide and Light Blue Optics showing miniscule demonstration units in the last week. Light Blue Optics’ PVPro technology for miniature projectors is now available to potential partners as a demonstrator unit, which is only 62cc in volume, and is similar in size and shape to a typical matchbox. Projectors based on PVPro technology can be used to display images from a range of mobile devices, including laptop computers, personal media players such as the video iPod, digital cameras and even mobile phones. The first digital SLR with true 'Live View'

The first digital SLR with true "Live View"

January 28, 2006 Since the introduction of the first single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, photographers have prized SLRs because they can see with the naked eye, through an optical viewfinder, exactly what is passing through the camera's lens. The "reflex" of a mirrored shutter that bends light to the camera's viewfinder, and then snaps open rapidly to create exposures, makes this possible and gives the SLR its advantage. But this SLR advantage, while delivering high-performance speed and accuracy, has one drawback in the digital age. Because the image sensor is blocked by the mirror and shutter until the moment the shutter button is pressed, the mirror and shutter mechanism prevents a traditional digital SLR from viewing and composing a photo using only the camera's Liquid Crystal Display as a viewfinder. The solution to this technical challenge is the revolutionary Olympus EVOLT E-330 digital SLR - the world's first interchangeable lens digital SLR to feature a true "Live View" image on the LCD screen, in addition to the optical viewfinder, and unite the best of both worlds. Pentax Compact A10 with 8 MPX, shake reduction and x3 zoom

January 13, 2006 The price-performance ratio of compact cameras continues to skyrocket as it seeks to maintain the performance gap to that of the fast-approaching camera phone, and the bar was raised higher at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show last week when Pentax announced the Optio A10 and E10 compact digital cameras. Though the E10 offers a six effective megapixel CCD and a 3X optical zoom lens, it was the new flagship compact A10 which really impressed. DropShots service to help families stay connected and share life experiences

January 12, 2006 One that got lost in the CES avalanche was the dropshots, a service to help friends and families stay connected through photos, videos, and conversations which has evolved from a three year University of California study on how to improve human interaction and strengthen the emotional bonds between people via advanced technology. Once a prototype under the name of JussPress.com, DropShots is the commercialization of this service now available to the general public. January 4, 2005 Kicking off this week's 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Eastman Kodak Company has introduced the world's first dual-lens digital still camera, the KODAK EasyShare V570 zoom digital camera. World's Largest High Definition LED Video Display

World's Largest High Definition LED Video Display

October 8, 2005 Here’s yet another version of one of the world’s favourite games – “mine’s bigger than yours.” Daktronics announced yesterday it has been awarded a contract to design and build the world's largest high definition (HD) light emitting diode (LED) display for Dolphins Stadium in Miami, USA. The display will measure approximately 15.2 metres high by 41.8 metres (636 sq. m) and will best the current record holder, the Turner Field screen in Atlanta which measures 21.6 by 24.1 metres (521 sq. m). The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2006 baseball season and although it will be the largest in the world when it is first switched on, the record will fall again later in the year when Tokyo Racecourse will open its 11 metre by 60 metre screen (660 sq.m). Of course that’s just the high definition record – the biggest video display in the world has stood for five years at 4 Times Square, New York and measures 27.4 metres by 36.5 metres for an even 1000 square metres. 30th Anniversary of the Digital Camera

30th Anniversary of the Digital Camera

October 7, 2005 2005 marks the 30th anniversary of the one of the hottest consumer electronic products in the world today – the digital camera. In 1975, the world’s first digital photograph was taken at a Kodak lab in Rochester, NY, USA, in an event that preceded the Compact Disc, the Personal Computer and the Internet. In 1974 Steven Sasson, an engineer at Kodak’s Applied Electronics Research Centre, was tasked with devising an “electronic handheld still camera”. The following year his first working prototype – weighing 8.5 pounds, powered by 16 AA batteries and recording images on a cassette – took the first ever digital still camera photograph. That’s Steve, the world’s first digital camera and the world’s first ever digital photograph at right. (read more...)

Low cost professional Teleprompter for digital video producers

Low cost professional Teleprompter for digital video producers

October 6, 2005 If you ever wondered why reporters and news anchors look and sound so knowledgeable, one of the primary reasons is that they use teleprompters. A teleprompter mirrors the script from a laptop to a small LCD, which is reflected onto an angled beam splitter mirror in front of the camera lens. The audience never sees it but the “talent” reads the script as it scrolls on the screen. With the line between professional television and digital video production getting greyer by the day, and Apple Macintosh playing such a huge role in the production, we thought the new ProPrompter LCD was worth a mention. It’s a professional portable teleprompter made for the new world of DV cameras without the high costs associated with professional gear. (read more...)

First2Print digitally-printed, ready-to-wear swim apparel

October 1, 2005 First2Print, a leader in large-format fabric printing services, is collaborating with ESPI Fashion Design to transform original artwork into ready-to-wear swimwear with a sneak peek of the 2006/2007 fashion line at New York's currently running Material World show. Via a combination of three different polyester fabrics, dye-sublimation inks, digital textile printers, and a heat transfer process, First2Print is able to digitally print fabrics that can go straight to the sewing machine, sink, or pool -- for vibrant, non-fading finished goods. What makes this project distinctive is that the entire short-run, production-fabric printing process is digital -- from the digital photo of the artwork design to the printed fabric itself. Unlike screen printed fabrics, which take weeks to complete, or traditional rotary mills, which have a minimum yardage requirement and a long turnaround time, First2Print is able to deliver customized yardage in just days as it is doing for ESPI Fashion Design. US$450 Photo Kiosk for the Home

That’s mighty cheap for a unit that features a 7-colour ink system producing 9600 x 2400 colour dots per inch, has the ability to scan up to 12 negatives or 8 slides, and also offers wireless printing. Makes you wonder where it will all end, heh? (read more...)
