SanDisk launches high-definition video card line for digital camcorders
January 14, 2008 SanDisk were busy at CES 2008 and among the announcements was the release of a line of Flash memory based high performance video cards for use in digital camcorders. The SanDisk Video HD cards will be available in SDHC (high capacity) and Memory Stick PRO Duo formats, and will be identified not only by capacity, but also by minutes of recording time. Designed to overcome the problems consumers face in estimating just how much recording time is available from various resolution settings, the SanDisk Video HD card packaging offers a chart that shows the approximate number of minutes for HD High, HD Standard and HD Extended settings. LBO reveals miniature projection systems at CES
January 11, 2008 Light Blue Optics unveiled a line of miniature projection systems at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week featuring an ultra-wide throw angle which enables large image projection at a close proximity to the aperture. (read more...)

Canon's new dual-Flash HD camcorder
January 9, 2008 Canon has announced its VIXIA line of consumer HD camcorders at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Headlining the act is the HF10 Dual Flash Memory camcorder, which eliminates the need for DV tape by allowing users to record up to six hours of HD video to a 16 GB internal Flash drive, plus a further 2-4 GB on removable SDHC memory cards. In addition to the HF10, the VIXIA line will include the HF100 Flash Memory camcorder, the HV30 HD camcorder and the previously released HG10 AVCHD Hard Disk Drive camcorder and HR10 AVCHD DVD camcorder. All camcorders in the VIXIA line feature a HD CMOS Image Sensor for Full HD (1920 x 1080) image capture, a DIGIC DV II Image Processor, instant AutoFocus and SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, which corrects a wide range of camcorder vibration for virtually shake-free images. DXG USA announces $149.99 HD camcorder
January 6, 2008 It’s a general rule with technology that as time goes on, features increase and size and price decrease, and so it is with the announcement from DXG USA that they will debut their DXG-566V HD camcorder with a retail price of USD$149.99 at CES. The DXG-566V HD is a 5 megapixel digital camcorder that records video in H.264, MOV file format with an HD video resolution of up to 1280 x 720 at 30fps and D1 resolution of 720 x 480 at 30fps. It features a 5 megapixel CMOS sensor, 3-inch TFT LCD screen, 2X digital zoom and support for high capacity SD cards to increase recording time once the unit’s 32MB onboard memory is full. New software provides rapid 3D modeling of large urban environments
October 23, 2007 Sarnoff Corporation has unveiled a new software solution that automatically builds accurate 3D site models of large urban environments in less than a day. MapIt!™ software utilizes aerial imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) to generate a continuous large-area 3D site model. This information can be used to provide military units and intelligence analysts with critical site data for an urban area as large as 800 square kilometer in around four days as opposed to the 40 to 60 days required for current urban modeling techniques. Olympus announces flagship E-3 digital SLR camera
Olympus has announced the launch of the E-3, the new flagship of the company's E-system digital SLR camera range and as expected - the specs are very impressive. The 10.1 megapixel unit includes body-mounted image stabilization that works on every lens, a dual-axis flexible-angle 2.5 inch live-view LCD, high speed sequential shooting at 5 frames per second, shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 sec and an 11-Point-Full Twin Cross AF detection system that delivers what's billed as the world's fastest auto-focus to date. The camera's magnesium alloy body has been designed for harsh environments with dust and splashproof sealing of all major parts, including the built-in flash, LCD monitor, and switches, adding to its durability. That's a whole lot of functionality to explore when the E-3 becomes available - along with a new range of high-speed lenses - from November this year. (read more...)
Canon to release new telephoto lenses for EOS range
October 16, 2007 Canon has announced the development of two new high-end telephoto lenses. Both units incorporate Image Stabilization technology, durable, light-weight magnesium alloy construction and optical systems designed to correct chromatic aberrations and minimize ghosting and flare common in digital SLR cameras. OMRON incorporates “smile measurement” into facial recognition software
October 11, 2007 Facial recognition specialist OMROM has unveiled what is essentially a “smile detector” – a piece of software capable of objectively measuring smiles and giving them a percentage rating. On the surface it sounds like a novel idea, but there are some interesting practical applications for this technology ranging from market research to consumer electronics, where for example, cameras could be equipped with the ability to ensure that everyone in frame is smiling before a photograph is taken.
